"Neat, straight, intact, and stylish. A Volvo PV ready for the summer meets."

Description

The current owner bought the Volvo in 2008. At the time, it had been sitting unused in a garage for many years. He thought the car looked quite untouched and appeared to have held up well against rust. Even the interior looked good. The original plan was just to fix a bit of rust in the right floor drain and get the car started for inspection.

However, when the registration papers arrived from the Swedish Transport Agency, he was surprised to find that it was an ES model, so the plans changed and a more extensive restoration began. The entire car was dismantled so the work could begin. The mounting points for the rear fenders were replaced, along with the rear fenders themselves and the rear section of the trunk floor. The front fenders were also replaced, and the front panel was repaired.

The braking system was overhauled, and the Volvo received new brake lines, wheel cylinders, and a master cylinder. The drivetrain was inspected, and the universal joints and center bearing were replaced. While the body was being painted, the engine was disassembled and received new bearings and piston rings. The cylinder head was taken to a workshop for resurfacing, valve replacement, and new seals.

Once the paintwork was done, the major task of reassembling all the car’s parts began. During reassembly, the car also got a new exhaust system, new door seals, a new headliner, new front and rear windows, and new whitewall radial tires. The windshield wiper system was converted from vacuum to electric drive. The car passed inspection in 2018 and got the thumbs up. The Volvo comes with two sets of keys.

Facts about the model

When it comes to the Volvo PV 444, changes between model years were often quite minor. In June 1951, the B model was replaced by the C model, though the difference was barely noticeable: wheels were changed from 16 to 15 inches, and the number of wheel bolts increased from four to five. When the PV 444 D and the special DS model were introduced in August 1952, the updates included a more powerful generator, improved steering, and a heating system that no longer had to be retrofitted. The distinctive roof-mounted indicator, known as the "roof rooster," was replaced by side indicators mounted on the B-pillar.

Up until 1953, the DS model was only available in grey. From New Year’s onward, the PV 444 Special was also offered in maroon red with a red and beige interior.

The Volvo PV 444 was produced from 1947 until 1958, when it was succeeded by the PV 544. The PV 444 became the best-selling car in Sweden during its time.
