"A classic “barn find” with a period-correct sidecar. Includes four reference photos of a similar Swedish-sold bike that was in running condition when last sold."

Description

This machine was registered for road use in Sweden on July 9, 1928. Currently, parts of its history remain unknown, but after World War II, it was deemed surplus by the military. It was likely requisitioned during the wartime preparedness years. A registration certificate from 1946 shows an owner in Örebro County, and the same name appears on a plaque mounted on the fuel tank—possibly indicating that the owner had the bike even before the war.

One immediately noticeable detail is that the cylinders are missing—likely removed for some form of repair that was never completed. Unfortunately, they have not been found. The vintage registration certificate is included with the bike.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Relatively complete, though missing components such as the cylinders. The pistons can be moved, and the crankshaft turns freely. Engine number: 28J11224.

  • Interior condition:

Saddle frame is present, as well as the seat in the sidecar.

  • Exterior condition:

Appears to be in original condition with a patinated finish after many years of being stationary.

  • General condition:

A Swedish-sold classic Harley-Davidson in well-worn original condition is, regardless of its state, a vehicle of historical significance with both enthusiast and collector appeal. In just three years, it will reach its 100th anniversary and gain full antique status.

Facts about the model

Harley-Davidson was founded in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1903 by William Harley and the Davidson brothers. The company quickly gained momentum, achieving both commercial and racing success. During World War I, after the U.S. entered the war in 1917, Harley-Davidson sold over 20,000 motorcycles to the military.

By the early 1920s, Harley-Davidson had become the world's largest motorcycle manufacturer, with sales in more than 60 countries. In 1921, they introduced the V-Twin engine with a displacement of 1212.6 cc, along with the now-iconic "teardrop" fuel tank. By 1928, front brakes were added to the J and JD models, and a newly improved sidecar was also introduced.

In the late 1920s and early 1930s, various models were released, including the 737cc flathead V-Twin designed to compete with the Indian 101 Scout. The early 1930s brought the Great Depression and all its challenges. Harley-Davidson was not spared from the economic downturn, facing significant drops in sales. However, the company weathered the storm and managed to continue its legacy of success.
