Description

The story of a dark green Volvo Amazon.

In 1968, the Amazon was purchased new by BPA Byggproduktion in Eskilstuna. BPA stood for Byggfackens Produktions AB and was a nationwide conglomerate where both LO and Kooperativa Förbundet were shareholders. (BPA later merged into the current PEAB and Bravida.) The car was assigned registration number D35936. Just a year later, BPA switched to a new car, and the Amazon was bought by Englunds Bil in Luleå. Since it was now located in Norrbotten County, the car was assigned registration number BD68236. The year was now 1969, and the then only 1-year-old Amazon was purchased by Mr. Edvind Letho in Boden. He was very satisfied with his car and owned it until 2015. The car then ended up with a lady in Övertorneå who initially intended to restore it, but instead handed over the car to the current owner.

All this information has been obtained through accompanying documents, the Swedish Transport Agency, as well as owner interviews. The current owner is a well-known car restorer and enthusiast who has restored several Volvo cars, including several fine Volvo PVs. Here, he has put incredible effort into restoring and improving the car to almost new condition. The entire car has been completely dismantled and renovated. It is impossible to list all the parts that have been replaced during the renovation. Everything the owner deemed inadequate was replaced with new or refurbished parts.

Over 140,000 SEK has been spent on new parts and materials alone, excluding labor costs. The car is in exactly the same appearance as an original 1968 Amazon and has been prepared with the goal of creating a car that is suitable for use in modern traffic, where all details have been carefully considered during the update to make it look like Volvo had built it this way. The mileage is 218 980 km, as the odometer rolls over. After the full restoration, the car has been driven 200 miles. So, that is probably the relevant distance. The owner now feels done with the restoration and is selling the car to benefit his other hobby vehicles.

Owner's comment

I have poured my soul into renovating the car to a standard that it can be proud of. Since it's a Norrbotten car, it wasn't particularly bad from the start. I had to replace the rear floor panels and the rear wheel housings. After that, the body was disassembled, and everything was painted both inside and outside. When the car was new, it had a B18 engine and an M40 gearbox. I upgraded the car with a B20 engine and overdrive to get a car with more power that can keep up with traffic without needing to be revved to the limit. You can engage overdrive already at 65-70 km/h, and it handles it without any issues. The engine speed is at a low 2500 rpm at 90 km/h. After the renovation, I drove 80 miles, then changed the oil and filter again. Despite the car having only driven 200 miles since the renovation was completed in 2022, it will be delivered freshly serviced. I don't want to leave anything to chance.

Facts about the model

During the 1960s, the Amazon was Volvo's volume car and a great success in several export markets. In 1966, the Volvo 140 was launched, but production of the Amazon continued until 1970. Throughout its production years, the Amazon underwent various modifications, but the basic form remained unchanged during the 14 years the model was manufactured. New features in 1968 included: Steering wheel for the adjustable lumbar supports in the front seats, a new shock-absorbing steering wheel with a recessed hub for better driver safety, brake servo on all models, new sun visors with more padding, and a split steering column for better driver safety. In total, 667,791 Amazons were manufactured between October 1956 and July 1970. (However, Volvo's official figure is 667,323 cars).
