"A car like this is truly remarkable. Normally, low-mileage, lady-driven older vehicles tend to be basic models with hardly any extra equipment. In this case, however, it’s the opposite — this is the coolest and most exclusive Volvo you could buy in 1996. That makes this car an anomaly. If you’re looking for a T-red 850 R in original condition, you’ll have a hard time finding one better than this. The car is ready to drive and approved by the inspection authority until October 31, 2027."

Beschreibung

We consider it highly likely that this Swedish-sold 1996 Volvo 850 R “T-Red,” with just 61,000 km on the clock, is the lowest-mileage example in Sweden. Note that in this case, we’re not counting cars that were bought new as collector vehicles — this one was purchased to be driven.

In 1996, a woman named Marianne walked into Volvo’s dealership in Kiruna. She had long dreamed of — and saved for — a sporty yet elegant car. When she saw the advertisement for the beautifully red 850 R, she fell in love instantly. So there she was, sitting at the sales desk at Eriksson Bil in Kiruna, signing the contract for a T-Red automatic. Whether she was ahead of her time in safety thinking or simply persuaded by a skilled salesperson, we don’t know — but she also opted for the rare accessory of a Volvo mobile phone with built-in hands-free.

When the car later stood in the showroom, ready for delivery, the local youths gathered around it. Word had spread that Eriksson Bil had received something truly special. Among those admiring the car was a 20-year-old named Daniel. By coincidence, he would later become the car owner’s neighbor. Daniel has followed the car closely over the years and has shared its story with Bilweb Auctions. At age 20, he couldn’t afford an 850 R, but since the car ended up next door, he kept in touch over the years and tried several times to buy it. But the owner was firm — this was her dream car, and she was keeping it.

We can assume she paid for it with savings, as she paid the full amount in cash when collecting the car. In 1996, cash payments were still common in Sweden, and buying a car that way wasn’t seen as strange or suspicious. However, since the amount was about 400,000 SEK, the cashier at Eriksson Bil reportedly sighed deeply — she wasn’t thrilled about having to count all that money and then take it to the bank to deposit it into the dealership’s account.

As this was the woman’s dream car, she used it carefully and sparingly. Each summer, she and her partner would drive from Kiruna to Rödupp outside Överkalix to pick strawberries — a journey of about 250 km each way. The car never traveled farther south than that, meaning it was never driven on salted winter roads and has enjoyed a gentle, peaceful motoring life.

In 2015, the owner passed away at the age of 70. Daniel, who had spent years trying to buy the car but always been refused, contacted the law firm handling the estate and expressed his continued interest. This was noted, and some time later, he was informed that an heir had been found. Daniel maintained contact with the heir, calling twice a year to restate his wish to buy the car. Finally, in 2024, he received the call he had been waiting for — he would be allowed to buy his youthful dream car. The vehicle had been safely stored in a garage the entire time and driven very sparingly by the heir.

After detailing and servicing the car and enjoying it for a summer, Daniel encountered a familiar dilemma — one faced by many owners of exceptionally low-mileage collector cars: Should I actually drive it or not? With every kilometer added, the car becomes a little less unique. So he has reached a crossroads — either begin using it as a regular driver without restrictions or sell it.

The owner has followed the car since new and guarantees the mileage is accurate. According to the vehicle register, it has had three registered owners, but in practice, it was used almost exclusively by the first owner. The heir and the current owner have merely been caretakers of this future piece of cultural heritage.

Included with the car are the owner’s manual, service book, and a receipt for a timing belt replacement done in 2024. The original spare wheel, jack, and warning triangle are also included. Note that this vehicle is one of only 944 T-Red 850 R sedans with automatic transmission ever built. See the history section for more details.

This is a remote auction. The photos and technical information have been provided by the owner. Bilweb Auctions has not inspected the vehicle in person.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

The engine is transversely mounted and is an all-aluminum inline five-cylinder unit. It features dual overhead camshafts with four-valve technology, as well as a turbocharger and intercooler. The car is front-wheel drive and equipped with a four-speed automatic transmission. The automatic version produces 240 hp.

The car runs well and has recently been serviced, including a timing belt replacement — done not due to mileage but because of age. It has been driven very little in recent years and has mostly been stationary, with a slight tendency toward wheel vibrations, likely caused by the tires. The air conditioning is in working order.

  • Zustand Interieur:

Very nice interior, consistent with the car’s low mileage. Carefully maintained inside. There is a small blemish on the back of the right front seat, as shown in the photo. Equipped with the rare Volvo mobile phone accessory, featuring a hands-free microphone mounted on the driver’s seat headrest (phone not tested). The stereo system includes both a cassette player and a CD changer, both of which function without issue. The luggage compartment is in excellent condition with no faults to note.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

Factory-original paintwork — the car has only ever been polished, never repainted. There are no dents, door dings, or other body damage. Minor stone chips are present, mainly on the front edge of the hood. There are also a few scrape marks on the underside of the front spoiler, but nothing noteworthy.

The car still wears its original 17-inch Volans alloy wheels, with some light curb marks visible. The tires were replaced with new ones in the correct size in 2011 and still look good, though they are starting to show their age. The underside is in excellent condition. On the top side of the front bumper, there are two small mounting marks from previously installed auxiliary lights.

  • Zustand gesamt:

Rare to find a low-mileage 850 R. This one has most of what collectors look for: low mileage, Swedish-sold, well cared for, and effectively a single regular user. Study the photos carefully for more information and to make your own assessment of its condition.

Kommentar vom Besitzer

When Volvo introduced the successor to the T-5R for the 1996 model year, it did so with the words: power and elegance. The company stated that the Volvo 850 R combined extreme performance and handling with Volvo’s well-known hallmarks of safety, durability, and reliability. It was the most powerful and fastest standard-production Volvo in the company’s then 70-year history. Among enthusiasts, it quickly earned the nickname “T-Red.”

So how many T-Red 850 R cars were built?

Thanks to R-enthusiast Ulf Thorén, who has conducted extensive research on the early R models, we know that only 3,337 850 R cars were produced in color code 609, commonly known as T-Red. The production breakdown is as follows:

854 R, T-Red, manual: 221

854 R, T-Red, automatic: 944

855 R, T-Red, manual: 419

855 R, T-Red, automatic: 1,753

Total T-Red (color code 609): 3,337

(Production numbers for other colors are not currently available.)
