Fakten zum Modell
Here is the entertaining saga of how the "thunderbird" conquered the world in 1957
To understand the 1957 model, we need to quickly rewind to 1955. Ford watched Chevrolet roll out its Corvette and came down with a case of acute car envy. But instead of building a pure, spartan sports car, Ford created a category all its own: the "Personal Luxury Car". The idea was simple: You should be able to drive fast, but you should absolutely not have to break a sweat or ruin your hairdo. It was a smash hit.
The facelift that gave the car wings
When 1957 arrived, Ford's designers decided the car needed a bit more "vroom-vroom" aesthetics. The result?
Fins with attitude. The rear fenders were drawn out into elegant, pointed fins.
The spare wheel went into the trunk. On the 1956 model, the spare wheel hung on the outside at the rear (the so-called "Continental kit"). It looked luxurious but made the car tail-heavy and hard to park. For 1957, the wheel was tucked back into the trunk, which made the rear end longer and the lines much cleaner.
The iconic "porthole": The removable hardtop (soft top) retained the small round window on the side. Perfect for glancing at admirers at intersections without having to turn your neck.
More punch than a small power plant
You couldn't just look fast, you had to move too. The standard engine was a rumbling V8. But for those who felt that "moderation is boring," Ford offered the legendary "F-Code" engine. It was a V8 equipped with an enormous supercharger. It pumped out around 300 horsepower, which in the 1950s was absolutely wild. It was said it could move both asphalt and hairdos with the same effortless power.
The 1957 model became a gigantic sales success with over 21,000 cars sold. But in the midst of the celebration, Ford's executives made a decision that made car enthusiasts choke on their coffee. They decided this would be the final year for the two-seat Thunderbird.
Why? Well, they realized that people with children also wanted to buy the car, but they simply didn't fit! So for 1958, the T-Bird was transformed into a four-seat, considerably heavier cruiser. It sold even better, but the soul of the '57 was gone
