Riley RMD Drophead 2.5 — 1950

1950 Riley RMD Drophead was a high-end luxury car of the early 1950s, combining elegant styling with a subtle sporting character. It is powered by a 2.5-litre engine producing around 100 hp, fed by twin SU carburettors, making it a high-performance touring car for its time. With only around 500 examples built—approximately 213 left-hand drive and 214 right-hand drive—this is an exceptionally rare car today.

"A wonderful-looking car, lovingly kept by husband and wife for the past 30 years. Never driven in wet conditions or during winter, and always stored in a warm garage. Now offered for sale due to age and reduced use in recent years."

Beschreibung

This car was imported from the USA and registered in 1990. It had previously undergone a full renovation in the United States, and according to a mechanic who knows the car well, all ash wood framing was replaced, along with a full body restoration and repaint. The interior was also retrimmed in leather. The car still presents very well today, with no damage or rust issues, and has never been stored outside.

I have known the owners—a husband and wife—for the past 5+ years. They are true enthusiasts with a love for British cars. The car was purchased by the wife in 1997 and has been used sparingly, mainly for summer drives, local events, and classic car shows.

In recent years, it has seen very limited use (over the past 5+ years), mainly due to age and health, but it has been regularly started and kept in a warm garage. I am also in contact with the mechanic who has serviced and maintained the car for over 20 years.

In 2014, the car underwent more extensive mechanical work, including engine removal. The timing chain and tensioner were replaced, along with new engine mounts. The brake system was fully reviewed with new cylinders fitted, and the clutch was also replaced. At the same time, hoses and pipework were renewed as needed before the engine was refitted. Since then, it has only received routine servicing.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch

I drove the car a short distance. It starts easily and the engine runs smoothly and steadily with no unusual noises. The gearbox selects gears well, and the brakes function as they should. The engine bay is exceptionally clean and well presented—this 1950s unit looks more like a piece of artwork than an engine.

We noted a oil drip while parked, likely from the sump gasket. These older cork gaskets can dry out over time and begin to leak. Given that the car has seen very little use over the past 5+ years, a general service and inspection are recommended before regular driving. Inspection exempt forever.

  • Zustand Interieur

Wonderful red interior with matching leather seats, panels, and door cards, all in excellent, undamaged condition, complemented by red carpets throughout. Upper door trims and dashboard are finished in wood and present very well. The car retains its original gauges and instrumentation, along with a nice three-spoke steering wheel. Rear passenger courtesy lights are currently not fitted but are included with the car. Headliner in the convertible roof is also in well-kept condition. Overall, a truly enjoyable place to sit and appreciate the charm of the 1950s.

  • Zustand Exterieur

Very well presented throughout, with straight body panels and no damage or rust issues, and the underbody is equally clean and solid. Paintwork is bright and well maintained, with only a few small stone chips around the front wings, otherwise nothing to report. Chrome work and trim are in good, shiny condition. The convertible roof is free from damage and fits well, though it may take a few attempts to master raising and lowering it. A routine clean and polish would enhance the overall presentation even further.

  • Zustand gesamt

This car oozes charm and character and will attract plenty of attention wherever you go. It’s ready to be driven and enjoyed this summer after a routine review and service.

Fakten zum Modell

The Riley RMD is a rare and elegant British drophead coupé, produced between 1949 and 1951. Part of the RM series—often referred to as “the last of the real Rileys”—it represents the final models developed before the brand was absorbed into BMC.

Only around 500 examples were built, making it a highly sought-after and uncommon car today.

Powered by the 2.5-litre “Big Four” twin-cam four-cylinder engine with twin SU carburettors, producing around 100 bhp, it delivers strong performance for its era, with a top speed of approximately 95–100 mph.

Based on the RMB saloon chassis, this traditional two-door convertible features an ash-framed body with steel panels and a distinctive three-position folding hood.
