An earlier ongoing renovation, that needs some work to reach its former glory. This car is now partially de mounted and recently the dashboard has been refurbished, seating upholstery has been replaced with hand-woven original fabrics. The engine compartment has also been updated, and condition of the engine and gearbox has been refurbished by the previous owner “not documented”
With only 1500 copies built and its history as Mercedes first attempt to create a “Folk car”, 170H today is a very unusual and sought after collector car worldwide. This project is near complete just requires some time, carpets, roof lining and some small details. Very few cars remain, most were destroyed during World War II when the car, thanks to its rear mounted engine, performed very well on bad roads. Ferdinand Porsche creator of the Volkswagen, had been chief engineer at Daimler-Benz between 1923 and 1928, when the little rear-engined Mercedes-Benz sedans was under development.

Bilen kommer från ett bilmuseum i Västra Götaland, Gällstad där den stod från 60-talet fram till 2012, då renovering påbörjades. Bilen ritades av den unge MB-ingenjören Walter Häcker i början av 30-talet, mest känd för att ha ritat den vackra 190 SL som presenterades 1954.

Introduced in 1935, the 170 H was a more powerful variant of Hans Nibel’s earlier 130 H, as it was equipped with an appropriately enlarged engine that now completely occupied the space in the rear of the automobile. It remained in production after World War II, and it joined its earlier sibling in being one of the original German “people’s cars”. Sporting three headlamps, the centre being a driving lamp, a rear-mounted engine, and streamlined bodywork, the design, in many ways, recalled the famous Czechoslovakian Tatra. Survivors are particularly rare and hard to find today, particularly pre-war examples, as so few of them survived the conflict.
The two-door Saloon offered here is a older restoration. Chrome has been selectively re-plated as necessary throughout, and notably, for what was a lower-cost Mercedes-Benz of this period, the interior has an impeccably elegant feel, with clear, round, chrome-edged gauges in a pure white dashboard, which is surrounded by polished wood trim. Despite its diminutive size, the 170 H can hold four adult passengers, as it has a full rear seat. Opening the front boot lid reveals a spare and a small tool kit, which includes a hubcap wrench and hand crank!
