"Crystal clear and right at home on the trendy vanlife scene with a conscientious owner who also has some understanding of how classic cars work in general, and VW buses in particular. In that case, it's right in many ways."

Beschreibung

It was sold new to its first owner in July 1976, likely a company, and a few years later to yet another. It was, after all, a light truck for commercial use. The current owner purchased the bus in 1982 and had a clear vision of what the family's camper bus should be. Many trips with two adults and two children followed. The current owner of 42 years is today 90 years old, and his son, who has many memories from growing up in the vehicle, is assisting with the sale. He will also walk a new owner through his father's well-thought-out solutions. The most recent, and therefore final, approved inspection was carried out on 2024-10-15; as of this year it is thus exempt from inspection.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch

Starts willingly and holds idle once the automatic choke is managed. The gearbox with its usual linkage still feels good, together with the clutch and brakes. The engine was replaced with a new one sometime in the late eighties.

  • Zustand Interieur

Clever solutions for a practical camper van, and they still work.

Otherwise, the interior from the 1980s conversion has held up very well. Seats, controls, carpets, and headliner. The charging warning light is on, but this is related to another charging light that had a loose connection or lost its ground at the time of documentation.

  • Zustand Exterieur

Repainted in a garage many years ago, and it has since spent much of its time outdoors. The finish can surely be polished up somewhat. The rubber seals are dry and slightly green, but bodywork-wise the car is sound. The camping kitchen at the rear, with a small awning tent and clever solutions that work, is ready for immediate use despite the time spent standing. Even the forward-thinking, early-installed solar panel system works. Silver-painted wheels and hubcaps with older tires.

  • Zustand gesamt

A pleasant and functional example that, despite a long period parked outdoors, has all functions intact. Not much work is needed to get the vehicle ready for camping duty again.

Fakten zum Modell

The Volkswagen Transporter T2 Baywindow was introduced in late summer 1967 as a 1968 model and was the second generation of Volkswagen's popular commercial vehicle. It replaced the original T1 model, the Splitscreen, and earned its nickname thanks to the new, large one-piece panoramic windshield that improved forward visibility. Beyond the updated appearance, the T2 offered a significantly more modern design with a safer body, improved rear suspension with semi-trailing arms, and an electrical system upgraded to 12 volts. Mechanically, the proven principle of a rear-mounted air-cooled boxer engine was retained. The model evolved in two main phases during its European life cycle: the early generation Early Bay (1968–1971) is recognizable by its low-mounted front turn signals and small, oval taillights, while the later generation Late Bay (1973–1979) received high-mounted turn signals next to the grille, larger rectangular taillights, and sturdier bumpers. The transitional year 1972 was something of a crossover model that blended details from both versions. The engines grew from the original 1.6-liter unit to more powerful options of up to 2 liters from Volkswagen's Type 4 series, the so-called pancake engine. The model became an enormous global sales success in the form of panel vans, pickups, and luxurious passenger buses. The camper versions in particular, outfitted by external companies such as Westfalia, cemented the T2's status as the ultimate symbol of hippie culture, freedom, and adventure. Even after European production ended in 1979, the T2 bus continued to be produced for several decades in countries including Brazil, where it was finally retired as late as 2013.
