Peugeot 203 "Ockelbo" Style 1290cc — 1952

In the late 1950s and early 1960s, Swedish car design ventured into the future with fiberglass and plastic materials, led by pioneers like the Volvo P1900 and various Ockelbo models. This inspired by the "Ockelbo Racer," features a body crafted by the Göteborg-based company Svenska Plastbilar, using their Carina body as a base. With a rich history under the ownership of Henry and his wife Gun, the car sports a design that evokes the elegance of a Jaguar combined with the classic allure of an old Ferrari.

Beschreibung

The binder also contains much documentation related to this car, other Ockelbo racers, and other homemade cars. Technically, the body is not an Ockelbo but a much rarer copy called Carina, manufactured in Gamlestaden, Gothenburg.

Build and Registration: The car was built in Gothenburg, but vehicle inspections there were strict with homemade cars, and it was rejected. On paper, it was sold to a friend in Örebro, where it passed the registration inspection. It was then immediately transferred back to Henry.

Henry, a newly graduated engineer at the time, designed and built the car himself, carefully calculating the chassis's strength and stiffness. Since there was no need for mass production, the frame was made as a truss of large-diameter pipes with thin walls to optimize weight and stiffness. Calculations and other documentation are collected in a binder that is included with the car. The entire frame is gas-welded with the correct welding wire for the pipe sections. Thanks to careful rust protection and the use of aluminum sheets and a plastic body, there are no known rust issues.

Plastic Body. The original shape is from an Ockelbo racer. Modifications include a bubble on the hood to accommodate the engine and a 20 cm extension to the doors. The fiberglass damage has been successfully repaired, but the car requires sanding and repainting.

Frame: The frame is made of welded pipes with a custom design. See the image. It has been painted four times for maximum rust protection. Henry, who built the car, was a mechanical engineer and personally calculated the frame's strength and stiffness. The result is an extremely light and stiff design with excellent performance. According to Henry’s wife, the car weighs around 608 kg, but this figure is based on memory. Combined with its low center of gravity, the car offers excellent handling.

Other Components: Parts like the wheel wells are made of aluminum sheets. A large aluminum sheet under the car protects the undercarriage.

The car is mainly composed of Peugeot parts, including the engine, gearbox, drivetrain, brakes, and rear suspension. The front suspension is custom-made because the body design does not allow space for standard upright struts. Additionally, parts from about 12 other car models are used.

Engine Compartment: Behind the engine, there is a box for storing spare parts and tools, which caught the attention of Yugoslav customs officials when we traveled through Europe on our honeymoon.

The engine has enlarged valves, a shaved cylinder head, and dual SU carburetors for improved performance. An additional, unmodified engine is included, which was used while the original engine was being tuned. However, some parts of the extra engine are missing.

Interior: The seats are upholstered in custom vinyl sewn by Henry’s wife, Gun. Surprisingly, the vinyl is not cracked, although the padding is now quite flat. The cockpit cover is also made of vinyl and needs repair. There is a black hardtop in desperate need of repainting. A soft top once existed but was destroyed in a storm.

Battery and Controls: The car battery is located slightly behind the driver’s seat, where the main battery switch is also found. The trunk release is located in the driver’s door frame and can only be accessed when the door is open. Similarly, the hood release is in the front of the driver’s door frame.

Exhaust System: The exhaust pipe runs below the passenger’s door, so care must be taken to avoid burns. The car is too low to accommodate the exhaust underneath.

Lights and Plates: The taillights and license plates were replaced after a change in regulations. The turn signals now have yellow bulbs.

The registration certificate lists the car as a “Peugeot Modified,” a valuable document that allows for almost any modification. Alternatively, the chassis number plate could be attached to almost any homemade car.

Use and Storage: The car was driven from 1961 as both a "special occasion car" and, at times, as a daily commuter. From 1965, its always been kept in a heated garage.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

    The car has not been started or tested since being taken off the road over 50 years ago. While everything is in place, it will require a full review and startup service, along with repairs to the rear driveshaft. Once these are completed, it will need a final inspection to qualify for inspection exemption for life.

  • Zustand Interieur:

    The interior is complete, featuring seats that resemble those from an MGA, which are in okay condition but will require renovation. The vintage gauges add a nice touch to the overall charm of the interior.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

    The plastic body has been repaired in some areas due to blisters and cracks, and extra taillights from a VW have been fitted to provide proper blinkers. The body will need renovation and a repaint. The underbody looks clean with no significant rust issues, as it has been properly stored in a warm garage.

  • Zustand gesamt:

    A wonderful-looking car with a charming history, it will look fantastic once renovated and back on the road.

Important to know before placing your bids!
  • Once you have called in an item and the reservation price is reached we want you to deposit the entire purchase amount into our client funds account before retrieval can take place.
