Beschreibung

A people’s car from Auto-Union and DKW from the 1930s, likely sold in Sweden. In Meisterklasse configuration, it features the larger engine. It has a two-cylinder two-stroke engine with a displacement of 690 cc and 20 hp, paired with a three-speed transmission. The F-series stands for front-wheel drive and was produced during the 1930s. The entire design was a small yet exquisite piece of craftsmanship and a masterpiece from DKW.

There is no direct information available, but it is said to have had few owners and was driven in the early 1970s. The last inspection was likely in 1972.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

    Appears relatively complete but has not been started or mechanically inspected.

  • Zustand Interieur:

    The interior is in dirty and patinated condition but appears relatively complete. The headliner is in decent shape, and the steering wheel, controls, and instruments are all in original condition.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

    Fifty years old but appears to be in original condition. Relatively complete, and the Pegamoid roof looks decent. The left rear fender is removed and is lying in the back seat.

  • Zustand gesamt:

    The new owner will need to conduct an originality check, which shouldn’t be a problem. After that, they can decide on the level of restoration. It could become a delightful car in patinated original condition or a fully restored gem. Most components seem to be present, and this model is a lovely classic that was a best-seller in Sweden in its time.

Fakten zum Modell

The DKW brand was founded and owned for many years by a Dane, Jörgen Skafte Rasmussen, who trained in Germany and later started various businesses there. There is some debate about what DKW stands for—Deutsche Kraft Wagen, Dampfkraft Wagen, or Der Kleine Wunder—referring to motorcycle production. We can set that question aside and note that:

In 1922, he began manufacturing motorcycles, and the business grew to become the world’s largest, a position DKW maintained until World War II.

In the late 1920s, he also built electric taxis and delivery vehicles, gradually moving closer to regular car production. This began in 1928 with the so-called Typ P, which had a 15-horsepower two-stroke engine of 584 cc and rear-wheel drive. Typ P was followed by several more rear-wheel-drive models, but in the fall of 1930, a front-wheel-drive model was constructed, aptly named “Front.” It was a small car equipped with the motorcycle division’s 500 cc engine, which was water-cooled in the car. Production of the Front began in 1931, followed the next year by the first Meisterklasse.

DKW cars eventually became a commercial success, but due to the instability of the world economy and particularly the German economy in the early 1930s, Rasmussen faced significant challenges. The solution came in 1932 with the formation of the conglomerate Auto Union AG, which included DKW, the Audi factory (also owned by Rasmussen), the luxury car manufacturer Horch, which was facing major financial difficulties, and cars from Wanderer-Werke. This is the origin of the four rings in the Auto Union car emblems.

By 1940, approximately 215,000 front-wheel-drive DKW cars had been produced, many of which were convertibles or had so-called cabrio-coach bodies. DKW cars were exported to numerous countries and were very popular in Sweden, quickly landing in the top ten list of sold car brands, primarily dominated by American cars. In 1939, DKW ranked third in Sweden after Opel and Chevrolet. Then came World War II.

After a decent recovery in the 1950s, the two-stroke engine quickly became outdated. Following various developments, including the acquisition of AU by Daimler-Benz and subsequent sale to Volkswagen, only DKW remained. In 1966, the brand was discontinued, and AUDI took over its legacy, but that is a completely different story.

  • At this auction, many vehicles have been included in car collections and have been stored (mothballed) for a long time. For this reason, they are described from a collector's perspective and may need technical reviews and maintenance service - oil, battery replacement, new tires, brake review, etc. - before they can be used. .
  • During the auction days information about a vehicle may be updated up to the day before the auction ends. When you bid at the end of the auction period - and also if you have made an earlier bid - we therefore ask you to read the descriptions carefully, in case something has been changed due to new information.
Important to know before placing your bids!
  • Once you have called in an item and the reservation price is reached we want you to deposit the entire purchase amount into our client funds account before retrieval can take place.
  • When you need to retrieve a called in object we want you to examine it carefully. If you consider that the item does not match our description you do not need to complete the purchase. In this case the deposited purchase sum and the entry fee are refunded.
  • If you do not examine the item on the spot the call charge will be debited, but you do not have to complete the deal.
  • If you make the entire purchase exclusively at a distance you have 14 days to cancel, but must return the item at your own expense.
  • Your shipping costs and other costs are not reimbursed when the right of withdrawal is exercised. Swedish court applies.
  • For items that have not been collected within 14 days storage costs may be charged.
