"A relatively untouched original vehicle and a lively little gem that does its job as intended, nearly 60 years after its production. Simple and economical for personal transport, it offers good space for its size. In its MG attire, it carries a touch of sporty ambition with features like dual SU carburetors. There are details to address for those who wish, or you can just hop in and drive—either way, you’ll be in a good mood in this car."

Beschreibung

This cheerful little car was registered for traffic in Sweden on April 18, 1966. The first owner lived in Söder and traded in his Austin A40 Futura when he purchased the MG in April 1967—apparently, he liked the combination of BMC and Pininfarina. According to reports, it was primarily used as the “shopping car” for his wife.

After a few more owners in Stockholm, it ended up in the countryside of Sörmland with a car enthusiast who had a fondness for British vehicles. He ran a well-known workshop in Sparreholm for many years. So, with few owners and low mileage, it reached its current owner in July 2021. He decided to keep it in Sörmland at his country house. He performed some work on the car, making it roadworthy and ready to drive, along with a final inspection.

The car comes with original documents, including the purchase contract, service and warranty papers, instruction manual, and more. There is also a binder with parts lists and useful workshop information, as well as a number of inspection papers pointing to a mileage of 83,740 km according to the odometer.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

The engine starts easily and runs well, with the drivetrain performing smoothly. There is a bit of moisture around the valve cover. During a test drive on country roads and gravel, the car felt lively and responsive. The steering, clutch, shifting, and brakes all worked well. The vehicle’s low center of gravity and special suspension contributed to good handling and comfort at normal speeds on gravel roads. It hasn’t been checked on a lift, but everything looked good in the vital areas that were visible. There were no comments from the inspection authority.

  • Zustand Interieur:

The interior appears to be in original condition. The seats and rear seat are upholstered in “vinyl” and are in good, well-preserved condition, as are the door panels. There is some normal wear on the side panels of the rear seat. The headliner is in good condition, and the carpets in the front and back are also in good shape. There is some wear over the raised section in the center, particularly in the front.

The dashboard with “wood” trim is in good condition. The thin Bakelite steering wheel shows mild wear, and the gauges, controls, and buttons are all in good condition. All electrical systems seem to function as intended, though the heating has not been checked.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

The paint appears to be mostly original, somewhat dull, and showing minor signs of wear. There are small stone chips and scratches, as well as a small damage on the left door. There is also an area near the sill/quarter panel where touch-up work has been done, though it’s unclear what caused this. The chrome, glass, trim, emblems, and lighting details are all in similar condition with mild signs of use. This applies to the wheels and hubcaps as well. The tires are in good condition. The engine and trunk compartments are in original condition with normal wear.

  • Zustand gesamt:

A pleasant little family car in British tones from the cheerful 1960s. Here we have a charming vehicle that is largely in original condition, with normal wear for its age and mileage. It’s a fine classic and enthusiast car from the year when The Beatles sang about a yellow submarine.

Fakten zum Modell

MG, or Morris Garages, was started by W.R. Morris. Initially, he sold bicycles and later cars. From 1913, he manufactured cars under his own name, Morris Motor Company, while maintaining Morris Garages as a separate entity. From 1924, he sold Morris cars with tuned engines and special bodies as MG cars.

During the 1930s, several sports versions were produced, including the MG Midget T-type. These T-type cars—TA, TB, TC, TD, and TF—were manufactured between 1936 and 1955, with some pauses during World War II. This was followed by the MGA and MGB models. By 1935, W.R. Morris had sold MG to the Nuffield organization. In 1968, MG became part of British Leyland, and by 1980, it was over for the brand. However, it continued under Rover and later BMW, until it ceased again in 2005. Recently, Nanjing Automobile Group has revived the MG name, but that’s a different story.

Over the years, MG became a brand name for various models and vehicles within different British automotive groupings. In the 60s and 70s, even the small Mini featured various logos and distinctive traits. We also remember the Pinin Farina-designed Austin A40 Futura and the finned saloons from the late 50s to the 70s, with MG being seen as the sportier versions featuring more instrumentation, often with wood trim and leather interiors.

BMC developed a larger variant of the Mini’s base concept, sometimes referred to as “Storkojan” or Rävlyan in Sweden. Internally named ADO16, it was a series of cars designed by Alec Issigonis and styled by Pininfarina (after 1961), produced from 1962 to 1974. Issigonis’s hallmark features included a transverse engine, front-wheel drive, and fluid suspension, while Pininfarina’s design boasted large glass areas and hints of fins. The ADO16 was available in various forms under the Austin, Morris, MG, Vanden Plas Princess, Wolseley, and Riley brands.

In October 1962, the “sportier” MG version 1100 was released, featuring dual SU HS2 carburetors and 55 hp. It had the traditional MG grille and a standard interior with leather and imitation wood, with “the real stuff” available as an option. Initially, it was a four-door model in England, but two-door versions were also available for export. In June 1967, the Mk II was introduced, featuring beveled fins and a 1300 version with a 1275 cc engine delivering 70 hp. By then, the MG was only offered in a two-door version. Production of the MG version of ADO16 ceased in the autumn of 1971, with a total of 157,409 units built. The price for an MG 1100 Mk1 in Sweden was around 12,000 SEK. Today, there are just over 20 examples of the MG 1100 Mk1 in Sweden.
