"Such a fine Rekord Coupe is something one would wish for every Opel enthusiast. Unfortunately, this model is critically endangered, at least in this fine condition. Already 25 years ago it was becoming difficult to find them, as the vast majority have succumbed to rust. We Swedes have been accustomed, indeed downright spoiled, by the fact that Opels from the 1960s have been inexpensive and readily available in our corner of the world. This has been discovered by forward-thinking foreign enthusiasts. It would be nice if the car stays in Sweden, which remains to be seen. The car is exempt from inspection under current classic car regulations and is ready to drive. Apart from some transmission noise from the rear axle, the car has very few remarks considering its age and mileage."

Beschreibung

The car's first owner was a Mr. Engqvist, residing in Västerås. He purchased the car on October 4, 1967. Engqvist held the title of company director – what else, with such a fine car? Mr. Engqvist must have chosen his new car very carefully, as he kept it all the way until 1991. The car was then acquired by a Mrs. Aronsson, residing in Karlstad. Just one year later, she sold the car to a Mr. Johansson in the same town. He was all the more fond of the Opel and kept it until 2001. The next owner kept the car for 13 years. In 2014, the current owner's family purchased the car. That is the complete ownership history from when the car was new up until today. The odometer shows just under 50,000 km. We consider it likely that the odometer has only turned over once, which would mean 150,000 km since the car was new. We base this on the car's fine unrestored condition. However, we cannot guarantee that the car has only covered 150,000 km. The alternative could be 250,000 km, but the question is whether the car would really look like this if that were the case.

Apart from the unusually small number of owners, each keeping the car for long periods, a common denominator must be that they all loved their car. Otherwise it would not look like this, but would more likely have been scrapped decades ago. The current owner's family does not have time to use the car, so they are letting it pass on to the next enthusiast. The car comes with a full binder of documentation and older inspection papers, as well as the complete ownership history including a copy of the first registration certificate. The original carburetor, spare wheel, and jack are also included.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch

Equipped with a 1.9-liter inline four-cylinder engine which in this configuration produces 90 hp. The gearbox is a 4-speed manual. The engine starts easily and runs well. In 2019, a factory-new Weber carburetor with manual choke was fitted, due to difficulty adjusting the CO level down at the inspection with the old carburetor. The original carburetor with air cleaner housing is included separately.

During long-term storage, a few drops of oil appear on the floor under the car. During a test drive, some transmission noise was noticed from the rear axle, which is not unusual for Opels from the 1960s. We recommend an overhaul of the rear axle in the medium term if you plan to drive the car extensively. The car runs well and steadily at highway speeds. Normal function of brakes and other mechanicals.

  • Zustand Interieur

Fine original interior. We managed to find two minor areas of wear on the driver's seat cushion (see photo). The floor carpet is sun-faded, but otherwise the interior is remarkably well preserved. The trunk is also in good condition with the original floor carpet preserved. The radio powers on but produces no sound. The clock's function is uncertain.

  • Zustand Exterieur

Repainted in its original color 12 years ago, otherwise in original condition. The paint still looks just as nice today. The bumpers and brightwork are in good original condition and have not needed replacement. The car is fitted with more modern whitewall radial tires from Vitour. One wiper arm is missing. The left rear fender trim is missing a clip at the front edge, something that is easy to remedy. Under the hood and in the trunk, the paintwork is completely untouched. With professional help, most of the engine compartment could likely be polished up again. Even just a thorough cleaning of the engine bay would be enough to lift the condition up a level. The fuel filler door at the rear is held by two screws, one of which has broken off and should be replaced.

  • Zustand gesamt

A dream for the Opel enthusiast looking for an original car that has never needed repairs. We assess that the car, apart from the repaint and the replaced carburetor, is virtually untouched since the 1960s. The car is in unusually good condition, but there are naturally minor remarks. It would be strange otherwise.

Kommentar vom Besitzer

The Opel Rekord Series C was unveiled in the fall of 1966 as a 1967 model and became an enormous sales success for Opel, with over 1.2 million examples produced across all body styles.

About the engine fitted in this car: It is often somewhat loosely said that the engine has an overhead camshaft. Opel had a specialty known as the CIH engine (Cam-in-Head), where the camshaft was located in the cylinder head, but beside the valves instead of directly above them. This solution allowed the head to be kept compact and low to better fit under the hood. Opel's CIH engine was introduced in 1965, and Opel went on to use this design in its engines for nearly 30 years.
