Mercedes-Benz 180 D W120 — 1959

The Mercedes W120 was the model that became known in Sweden by the nickname “Bull-Mercan.” This may have been because it was perceived as unusually down-to-earth and accessible for a car made by a manufacturer associated with high-status vehicles.

"A beloved child has many names. The fact that many Swedes referred to it as “Bullen” at a time when class divisions were still a clearly defined part of society can be interpreted in different ways. One indisputable fact, however, is that the model offered a very high level of quality, surpassing most contemporary cars.

This particular Mercedes 180 spent many years in a private automobile museum. In 2024, the museum collection was dispersed. The car then found a good home and has since received a thorough inspection, including servicing and various improvements.

The Mercedes was last inspected on September 26, 2024, and under the current regulations for historic vehicles, it is now exempt from further periodic inspections."

Beschreibung

When the founder of the major logistics group Sandahls began building his extensive car museum in 1978, this was one of the first cars acquired for the collection. It remained there for 46 years, until 2024, when the museum collection was dispersed and the classic cars were sold at auction.

The current owner then became the sixth registered owner, including motor dealers. He is a Mercedes enthusiast who has restored and collected classic Mercedes-Benz cars for more than 40 years. Since acquiring the car, he has devoted considerable time and effort to servicing and improving it.

Work carried out includes a complete overhaul of the braking system, new hoses for the cooling and fuel systems, a major service with replacement of all oils and filters, a new water pump and fan belts, a new genuine Mercedes-Benz silencer, and new engine mounts.

The odometer currently shows 7,221 Swedish mil, equivalent to 72,210 km. We cannot verify whether this mileage is correct.

The car comes with an original tool kit, owner’s manual, engine workshop manual, the comprehensive spare parts catalogue, as well as a spare wheel and jack. Two sets of ignition keys are also included.

The owner has ordered and received the complete historical records from the Swedish National Archives, including copies of registration documents and other material. As a result, considerably more is now known about the car’s history than was available when it was purchased at auction in 2024. Read more under the heading “Owner’s Comments”.

This is a remote auction. The photographs and information regarding the vehicle and its technical condition have been provided by the owner. BWA has therefore not inspected the car in person at the seller’s premises.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch

The diesel engine starts easily after the traditional glow-plug preheating procedure and runs very well. The clutch and gearbox operate normally.

The brake master cylinder and all wheel cylinders have been either overhauled or replaced, together with new genuine brake shoes and new brake hoses. The injection pump has also been inspected and fitted with a new diaphragm.

The hoses for the cooling and fuel systems have been replaced, as have the filters and oils in the engine, gearbox and rear axle. The car was fully lubricated approximately 500 km ago.

A new water pump and new fan belts have been fitted, along with a new genuine silencer and new engine mounts.

  • Zustand Interieur

The interior is in very good, unrestored condition. The headlining is complete and tidy, although it has darkened somewhat with age. The interior has undergone a thorough deep clean, including shampooing of the seat upholstery, with very good results.

All seats are in good condition. The Bakelite trim around the window frames and on the dashboard has stood the test of time well. The original rubber floor mats have hardened with age but remain free from cracks.

The steering wheel is unusually well preserved, with no cracks or crazing. All gauges in the central instrument cluster are functioning correctly, as is the clock following servicing by a watchmaker.

The fabric on the rear parcel shelf is not of the original specification.

  • Zustand Exterieur

The bodywork and paint were refurbished during the 1990s. The paintwork remains in good condition, with no bubbling and only a few minor marks. There is a scratch on the boot lid, as well as two small areas of paint loss on the right rear wing. We believe something may have come into contact with the car while it was on display in the museum.

The body is straight and presents well, with no significant rust issues. The chrome is in good condition, and the underside is clean and well maintained.

The car is fitted with new tyres and freshly repainted hubcaps. Original Bosch auxiliary lights of the type associated with the “Bulle” have also been fitted, featuring the unusual yellow lenses that complement the green paintwork particularly well.

  • Zustand gesamt

The car spent more than 40 years in a museum. It has now been recommissioned by a Mercedes-Benz enthusiast and is ready to drive.

Kommentar vom Besitzer

The Mercedes 180 (W120), introduced in July 1953, was Mercedes-Benz’s first newly developed mass-production model after the Second World War. With its unitary ponton-style body, it represented a complete break from its predecessors. By the time production ended in October 1962, almost half a million cars had been built in various versions.

The diesel version of the 180 was introduced in January 1954 and initially used the engine from its predecessor, the legendary OM636. This engine was produced in several versions from 1948 to 1990, with close to one million units manufactured.

After 1961, when the 180 received the newer OM621 engine, the OM636 continued to be widely used in a variety of commercial vehicles, agricultural machinery and as an inboard engine in large numbers of boats around the world.
