Beschreibung

The current owner, a dedicated VW enthusiast, shares the fascinating story of the car and the work that has been done:

I first heard about the car through a friend, who showed me a picture of a very dusty Karmann Ghia Type 34 sitting in a building. It turned out to be a barn. I placed a bid just based on the photo and arranged for us to come and see the car. Said and done. The owner even had a VW expert present to make sure everything was handled properly.

We inspected the car and discovered it was in fantastic condition. A 1964 car that had been standing in a barn since 1984. The first owner, the seller’s father, had bought it new in 1964 and used it together with his daughter. Why they put it away in 1984 I don’t know, but some important engine components had come loose, so perhaps that was the reason it was stored.

After our inspection, confirming that there was no serious rust and that the engine still turned over, the question came up whether I would stand by my offer. I did, and told the seller I was ready to buy the car. His expert had probably told him he might get more for it at auction, but since the barn was about to be rebuilt, he didn’t have time to wait.

Two weeks later, I had written the Ghia off as a possibility when the seller suddenly called and asked if my offer still stood. It did, and I was able to buy it. The next day I went and picked it up.

Once home, after giving it a wash, I realized the car was in much better condition than I had dared hope. I found a professional car detailer who works with the major manufacturers, and he agreed to clean and seal both the exterior and the interior.

I then got help from a professional VW builder who wanted to be involved in getting the car fully roadworthy. The engine was removed and we agreed not to restore it to brand new condition, since the car should retain its 1964 originality. Instead, the engine was checked for compression, leaks, and valve condition. The entire electrical system for the engine was renewed. The carburetors were cleaned and fitted with new valves. Everything was tuned to perfection, and then the engine was put back in with a new clutch and boots — all with the original 1964 patina intact.

I replaced the entire brake system, from the master cylinder to the brake shoes, including all the lines, of course. The electrical system was gone through as well, and the car passed its inspection last summer without issue — the final inspection required. New tires were also fitted last summer, since the old ones from the 1970s drove like wooden clogs, with the rubber peeling away. Even the cigarette butts in the ashtray are still there! The next owner can empty it if they like.

The car is completely original as it left the factory in 1964, apart from consumable parts I have replaced. It is otherwise untouched, and I am only the second owner since new in 1964.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

The car runs excellently and everything works well. The current owner, together with a VW expert, has gone through all the mechanicals (see Description).

  • Zustand Interieur:

Very nice original interior in complete condition with only minor signs of use. The seat padding has dried out and crumbles slightly when touched.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

The car was repainted in its original color sometime in the early 1980s and has held up well. There are some small paint chips. The chrome shows signs of wear but has been treated to prevent further rust. New tires in the correct dimensions are mounted on the original wheels.

  • Zustand gesamt:

A very rare and roadworthy Karmann Ghia that rightfully attracts attention at every meet and show.
