"The current owner, a flight mechanic, has done all the work on the car himself. It’s a classic enthusiast restoration, done the way it used to be. The car has a high level of finish with consistent attention to detail and overall quality. It’s a classic vehicle meant for regular use rather than a showpiece. The focus has been on functionality, driving pleasure, and nostalgia."

Beschreibung

This car was sold new in Sweden and type-approved through Förenade Bil in Malmö on October 15, 1960. Over the years, it appears that its owners have been based in Stockholm and Sörmland. The current owner, a motor and racing enthusiast with experience in car orienteering and rallying, acquired the car in December 2015. Throughout his life, he has not only competed but also worked on and restored racing cars and historic enthusiast vehicles. As a flight mechanic by profession, he has gained both experience and knowledge in the technical field. His choice of this particular car stems from nostalgia, as he had a similar one as his first car at 18, so the sentimental value is high.

He has restored the car, and as a motorsports enthusiast, he has given it a sportier look and equipment than the original. Most of the original parts are included, such as the steering wheel, seats, wheels, hubcaps, etc. It’s no surprise that a BMW 700 takes on this character, as it was relatively common in rallying and on tracks like Skarpnäck in its time. Today, it’s featured in historic racing, especially on the continent. The odometer reads 427 km, having rolled over at 99,999 km, likely only once, so the total mileage should be 100,430 km.

The car comes with original documents, protocols, receipts, extensive brand and model documentation, articles, and photos from the restoration. The car is ready to drive.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

Test-driven at a relaxed pace on a small country road, but when the current owner drove it, the pace was much quicker. Starts easily and runs smoothly in both the engine and drivetrain. Steering, clutch, shifting, and brakes are all in good working order, with tolerances typical for a 65-year-old car of this type. The car hasn’t been inspected on a lift, but it has been restored, and according to the owner, great care has been taken with the mechanics and undercarriage. From what could be seen, everything looked good. No remarks from the vehicle inspection.

  • Zustand Interieur:

Newer door panels, dashboard top padding, and textile carpets. New retro-style sport seats in the front. The rear seat is in original fabric (the original front seats with fabric are included). The steering wheel, along with various gauges and rally instruments, follow a light racing theme (original parts included). The headliner is in good condition. The helmet shown in the pictures is not included.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

A garage paint job in good condition. The bumpers are painted silver, while the other chrome parts are in good shape. Glass, plastic, rubber, and lighting details are in the same condition. 1960s-style additional front lights and a reverse light are fitted. Racing-style wheels (original wheels included) with good tires. The engine and trunk compartments are in the same good condition.

  • Zustand gesamt:

A well-restored car where everything appears to work as intended. The small cars from the early 60s are motor-historically significant and charming vehicles, from the era when car ownership became widespread across Europe. As such, a BMW 700 stands out as a delightful classic and enthusiast car.

Fakten zum Modell

After BMW restarted car production in West Germany after World War II, they offered a wild mix of microcars, large outdated luxury cars, and sports cars. It didn’t go so well—microcars became obsolete as the economy grew and demand decreased. The market for bulky luxury cars and sports cars was also insufficient. So, at the turn of the 1950s and 60s, BMW took a fresh approach. The market for smaller family cars with space for four was booming. BMW developed a new model to get back on track during this challenging period. The gamble paid off, and the first model was the 700, which entered production in the fall of 1959, turning BMW’s fortunes around. By the early 60s, BMW gained more strength and confidence, leading to the launch of the “Neue Klasse,” a larger mid-size car with a sleek and roomy body and modern design. It was another success, followed by the compact 02 series, sealing BMW’s comeback. The rest is automotive history, and today, BMW is one of the major players.

Back to the 700 model, introduced in 1959. It wasn’t part of BMW’s premium line, but it was crucial to their survival. The 700 was partly based on the earlier model 600, itself an upgrade of the Isetta microcar, featuring a two-cylinder boxer engine—originally 585 cm³ but now increased to 697 cm³, producing 30 hp. The body was now a unibody design, with styling by Michelotti—Italian design being trendy at the time. The car finally looked like a proper car, with its design reflecting trends of the era, with straight lines and small tailfins reminiscent of Fiat, Peugeot, and BMC. The front had similarities with cars like the VW Type 3. The first model was a coupé, which was also in vogue then. A traditional two-door sedan followed. As early as 1961, the coupé received higher compression and twin carburetors, adding 10 more spirited horsepower. That same year, a cabriolet was introduced with the same technology and performance. Demand was high, and customers often had to wait for their new car. Production continued until 1965, just as the new 02 series was on the horizon. In total, 185,000 units were produced, of which about 11,000 were coupés. From the start, the 700 was a popular and relatively successful racing car. Notable figures like Jacky Ickx and Hans Stuck competed in BMW 700s back in the day.
