"A rare and meticulously restored vintage police car - in very good condition with some traces from its years of service."

Beschreibung

This Saab was originally purchased in 1984 by the Police Academy in Sörentorp. The vehicles at the Police Academy were equipped the same way as those used in the field. The purpose was to allow the students to train with real equipment and become familiar with it before they went on duty. The Saab served in this capacity until 1992 when it was decommissioned and sold. By that time, it had accumulated just over 50 000 km.

The current owner discovered the car in 2020 and embarked on an extensive project to restore it to its original service condition. This included sourcing a set of NOS (New Old Stock) decals from the 1980s, including the distinctive 'hockey stick' decal. The text on the doors has been reproduced to match the original police markings.

The equipment included with the car is extensive, and it comes with:

Stockholm North Road Map from 1984.
Carbon Dioxide Tester.
Small First Aid Kit (RPS).
Traffic Flares (2 boxes).
2 Dark Blue Police Capes.
Vintage Fire Extinguisher.
2 Sets of Traffic Manchets (Cuffs).
Handcuffs (1 pair, no key).
Classic Breathalyzer with Ampoules and Balloon.
Trafyr Orange Traffic Lamp (1 piece).
Blue Trafyr Traffic Lamp (1 piece).
2 Trafyr Orange Traffic Lamps.
KLAS Collapsible Shovel (1 piece).
Customized Piassava Broom (1 piece).
Kit with Protective Gear for Serum Hepatitis.
RPS Signal Call Directory (1 piece).
A set of keys.
This Saab holds a piece of police history and is a remarkable example of a well-preserved police vehicle from the 1980s.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

Fully equipped with everything that a police patrol had with them at the time. The blue rotating lights on the roof are not connected. The car's radio is an Ericsson C-602 in RPS design with the correct labeling on the back. Some wiring is missing - not function tested. Siren speaker and amplifier are included separately. Saab's original wiring diagram for police cars is included.

  • Zustand Interieur:

The interior has held up very nicely over the years. There is a slight sag in the front of the headliner and a damage to the rear pillar. Two small holes have appeared in the front passenger seat. The driver's seat is in great shape.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

During the renovation/restoration, the rear fenders were repainted. As a practice vehicle, they went through tough conditions. Most of the damage on the car is work-related. There are scratches, touch-ups on the paint, and a dent on the driver's door. However, there is no rust. There are a few small bubbles, but the underside is in good condition and has recently been treated with underbody protection. The rear bumper is slightly dented.

  • Zustand gesamt:

Very few older police cars have made their way into circulation for natural reasons. More often than not, they are decommissioned and sold to civilian owners. In this case, extensive efforts have been made to restore a patrol car to its original specifications. It's essentially an almost complete police car from 1984 in excellent condition—a remarkable example of preserving the history of police vehicles from that era.

Kommentar vom Besitzer

The Saab 900 of the first generation was indeed one of the longest-serving police cars. From its introduction in 1978 until its discontinuation in 1993, the Swedish National Police Board purchased approximately 1,000 Saab 900s in various versions, both as marked police cars and unmarked civilian vehicles. The Saab 900 divided the police force into two camps: those who liked the car and those who strongly disliked it. Traffic police officers seemed to be the most positive about it, possibly because they often received the turbocharged versions.

Despite the fact that so many Saab 900s served as police cars, there are practically none of them left today. In 1978, when the first Saab 900s were purchased by the police authorities, all Swedish police cars were painted black and white. In 1984, a new livery was introduced for police cars. Instead of the traditional black and white, the cars were to be all-white with reflective stripes. This change was made to save costs when the cars were decommissioned. The livery has since been dubbed the "Hockey Stick" because, with a bit of imagination, the side stripes resemble a hockey stick lying horizontally over the rear fender. Despite the large number of Saab 900 police cars produced, there are almost none left today. Only two known Saab 900 veteran police cars with the Hockey Stick livery are in private collectors' hands. Neither the Police Museum nor the Saab Car Museum in Trollhättan has a 900 police car with the Hockey Stick livery in its collections.
