"A charming, well-used exterior is complemented by a pleasant interior filled with leather and wood."

Beschreibung

A aerial photographer named Bergman from Östersund purchased this car new in Stockholm. He kept his Jowett Javelin for only one and a half years, after which it changed hands a couple of times before becoming a parts car as early as 1956. However, not many parts were actually taken from it; instead, it ended up in a forest clearing. Between 1974 and 1979 it was restored, and a first longer journey was documented by motoring journalist Peter Haventon in Teknikens Värld no. 25/1979. Interestingly, the arrangement was similar when the magazine Klassiker took the car on a journey in no. 7/2023. By then the car had been standing idle for 27 years and was just being started again. It had been fitted with new water hoses, a new starter motor, new rubber in the brake system, new tyres and the water pump had been overhauled. The engine, gearbox and rear axle had been given fresh oil, and a new battery fitted. The current owner has owned the car since 2024 and is now selling it at auction as he wishes to reduce his car collection. During his ownership, the speedometer has been restored by the well-renowned company Instrument Jige. A folder with a previous owner's description of what he did with the car as well as photocopied articles about the model is included with the purchase, along with some spare parts (including a carburetor) and instruction manuals and a spare parts catalogue. In addition, the plum jam stopper visible on the hat shelf is included! A set of keys is available.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch

Starts easily and runs well in engine and gearbox. Right-hand drive. Fuel gauge does not work, and temperature gauge occasionally maxes out, but this does not correspond to reality.

  • Zustand Interieur

A beautiful leather interior in a moderately patinated condition. Door panels, carpets and headliner are also in good, but used, condition. A detachable table for mounting on the back of the front seat is included; it hooks into place. The upper part of the dashboard has minor cracks in the finish. Surface rust is present on a sheet metal part in the luggage compartment.

  • Zustand Exterieur

A good but worn exterior. Minor paint damage is present, the brightwork is also in similar worn condition and the hub caps have porous chrome. Rust is mainly present in one spot on the bodywork – see image. The outer door handle on the left rear door is missing, but the door can be opened from the inside.

  • Zustand gesamt

A veteran car that you will likely be alone with at the car meet. Should another Jowett Javelin appear, you can outshine the other owner by the fact that your example has been featured in several motoring magazines. It's easy to forget that this is a car from the early 1950s, because this is a drivable and thriving classic.

Fakten zum Modell

Jowett's first car was manufactured in 1906 in Bradford, England. During the Second World War, the small car manufacturer managed to attract Gerald Palmer from Morris. He was given a free hand with the marque's new car, which was to be manufactured when peace came. The result was the Jowett Javelin, introduced in 1947. A similarity with the marque's predecessors was the boxer engine, now with four cylinders. The model departed from other English cars of the period with its monocoque body, independent torsion bar suspension front and rear, and good aerodynamics. The result was a car with good performance and road-holding. The Javelin won a class victory at the Monte Carlo Rally in 1949 and at the RAC Rally in 1952. The Jowett Javelin sold well in Sweden; between 1948 and 1954, 1,871 examples were sold here, which represented nearly 15 per cent of total production. However, the successes in Sweden were not enough, and in 1954 the Jowett marque disappeared.
