Volvo Cross Country C303 4X4 (Tgb 11) B30 — 1976

Purchased new in 1976 by the state-owned company Vattenfall and used sparingly as a standby vehicle for line work, having only covered 14,000 kilometers. This is the civilian version of the Tgb 11, known at the time as the Cross Country C303. When Volvo was preparing to launch its all-wheel-drive vehicle, the V70 XC, in 1997, Volvo Cars had to acquire the rights to the Cross Country name from the truck division that owned the naming rights.

Beschreibung

Delivered new to Vattenfall, where it was used as a standby vehicle. It remained with Vattenfall Elnätservice AB as a reserve vehicle until 1994, after which it was sold to a business owner in Jokkmokk who also used the car sparingly. According to the vehicle registry, it has had 7 owners, but since ownership was transferred between different Vattenfall companies, the car has effectively had 3 users. In 2023, the current owner, who had long dreamed of owning an untouched C303, purchased the vehicle. He replaced many worn parts such as hoses, brakes, carburetor, etc., sparing no expense. The vehicle has been used for personal recreation, such as fishing and other outdoor activities where a rugged, strong, and robust vehicle with good ground clearance is ideal.

Due to changing circumstances, the owner is now selling the off-road vehicle. According to the odometer, it has only covered 14,000 kilometers, and considering the history and condition, this mileage is believed to be accurate. The vehicle is inspected and approved until December 31, 2025. It falls under vintage vehicle regulations, so it is tax-exempt. A spare wheel is included. For more information, please read the owner’s comments.

This vehicle is being sold via remote auction, so the images and information about the technical condition have been provided by the owner. BWA has not inspected the vehicle in person.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

The car is powered by a straight six-cylinder B30 engine with dual carburetors, delivering an output of 117 horsepower. It is equipped with an engine block heater and features a 12-volt electrical system. The vehicle is four-wheel-drive with portal axles, providing extra ground clearance. According to the owner, the engine and transmission run smoothly. The cooling fan is electrically controlled by a thermostat, ensuring optimal engine cooling even at low speeds, as the engine does not need to be revved high to rotate the fan.

The current owner has invested significantly in the vehicle, replacing hoses, installing a replacement carburetor, servicing it, and fitting a new 12-volt Webasto water heater. The vehicle is equipped with a winch powered by the gearbox’s power take-off. (For more details on the technical aspects, please refer to the owner’s comments.)

  • Zustand Interieur:

Exceptionally well-preserved interior. This is the original interior that the car was delivered with in 1976. There are some marks and minor damages on the seat upholstery, which have been repaired in a solid and practical manner. See the photos for details. All controls and instruments are functional. The original interior in the rear cabin is also complete and in good condition, including the bench seat, folding chairs, and cargo protection grille.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

The body is straight and in good condition. The car is blue, reflecting its original ownership by the state-owned Vattenfall. There are a few touch-ups on exposed areas, some marks, minor dents, and a few spots of surface rust—see the photos for details. The tires are retreaded Michelins with good tread depth, which were installed in the 1990s. The vehicle is equipped with a sturdy roof rack/cargo basket, a feature from its time with Vattenfall.

  • Zustand gesamt:

An exceptionally good and solid example of the C303 that leaves a strong impression. It has been well-maintained, first by the state-owned Vattenfall, and then carefully invested in and maintained by the current owner. As a result, the vehicle has not been subjected to the harsh treatment often seen with off-road enthusiasts, a fate that commonly befalls this model.

Kommentar vom Besitzer

Värmaren sitter monterad i motorutrymmet.

Swedish men who completed their military service (lumpen) between 1960 and 2005 have likely encountered Volvo’s off-road vehicles. Since the 1950s “Suggan,” Volvo has been supplying all-terrain vehicles to the Swedish Armed Forces. There may still be a few camouflaged examples of the Tgb 11 in active service today.

The Tgb 11 model was introduced in 1974, replacing the smaller “Valpen” with the designation C202. In addition to the Tgb 11, there were also the Tgb 13 and Tgb 20 models, the latter two being extended three-axle vehicles with six-wheel drive. The Tgb 11 was four-wheel drive and proved to be so durable and reliable that Volvo Trucks began producing civilian versions. The civilian model was named Cross Country C303, where “30” represented the 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder naturally aspirated engine, and “3” indicated the vehicle’s total weight of three tons. It was sold on the civilian market to organizations such as the rescue services.

When it came time to launch the Volvo V70 XC in 1997, Volvo Cars had to acquire the Cross Country name from the truck division.
