"A very good barn find that needs a technical inspection and a thorough going-over. Among other things, the brakes require a complete rebuild. The good news is that wear parts for these fantastic Beetles are still available new. The car has been removed from the vehicle registry, so the new owner must carry out an origin check with the Swedish Transport Agency and then have the car undergo a registration inspection with the vehicle inspection service before it can be put back on the road."

Beschreibung

We are selling the car on behalf of an estate in Värmland. When the owner recently passed away, the heirs brought out the old Beetle. At that point, it had stood untouched since the 1980s— even the neighbors were unaware that the car was part of the collection.

The original plan was to carry out a technical inspection, rebuild the brakes, detail the car, and then use it in its charming current condition. However, due to changed circumstances, the heirs have now decided to sell the car.

The brake shoes have been removed so the car rolls freely, and the fuel tank has been removed and cleaned. The car has also undergone both exterior and interior cleaning.

The key to the original ignition lock is missing, so a replacement ignition lock is included loose with the car. The door key and the windshield wiper arms are missing. The spare wheel and jack are also not included.

The current odometer reading is 4,795 Swedish mil (47,950 km). The total mileage of the car is unknown.

We believe the car was repainted in the very early 1980s. The small spots/paint bubbles visible over much of the car suggest that spray filler may have been used during the repaint, which was common practice at that time. The last vehicle tax receipt for the old registration plate is dated 1985, and there is also an old decal on the side window indicating that the car attended Bug Run at Mantorp in 1984. Taken together, this suggests that the car was last inspected in 1984 and has been laid up ever since.

The buyer may choose to address only the mechanical aspects and drive the car as it is, or undertake a more extensive restoration with a full repaint, which would make it very nice indeed. Both options have their own charm.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

6-volt electrical system; no electrical functions have been tested as there is no power. A 6-volt battery of unknown condition is included. The engine has not been test-run and requires a start-up service and general inspection before any attempt to start it is made. We therefore do not know the condition of the engine. We have, however, turned the engine over by hand without any issues—see video. The engine number indicates that the engine has been replaced with a 1200 cc, 30 hp unit manufactured in 1960.

  • Zustand Interieur:

Very good condition of the interior, especially considering the long period of storage. Nice, intact seats, fine door panels, and good carpeting. The rubber floor mats are in good condition. The floor looks exceptionally good under the mats. The headliner is intact but has darkened in color over the years.

A key for the steering wheel lock is included. The ignition lock did not have the correct key and has therefore been removed; a replacement ignition lock is included. The window crank and door release handle for the driver’s door are included loose

  • Zustand Exterieur:

Good overall impression, with even, nice panel gaps between the body panels and the doors and hood. Older repaint with runs, small surface rust spots, and scratches. Bumpers are intact with some surface rust; the bumper overriders are included loose. Door handles and trim strips are oxidized. Older tires that still hold air.

The condition of the underbody—so far as can be assessed without lifting the car—appears above average for the model, considering the long period off the road and the way it has been stored. Please review all photos carefully for more information.

  • Zustand gesamt:

An excellent project car for anyone looking to restore an oval-window Beetle to original specification. Very few details are missing, the body is in unusually good condition, and the car can be improved gradually over time.

Fakten zum Modell

In 1955, Volkswagen passed the milestone of one million cars produced, and that year Scania-Vabis in Södertälje was the world’s largest VW importer.

The Volkswagen Type 1 ‘Beetle’ holds the record as the world’s most produced car. By 1972, more than 15 million units had been manufactured, at which point it took the title of ‘World’s Most Produced Car’ from the Ford Model T. In 1985, production of the Volkswagen Type 1 ‘Beetle’ ended in Germany. However, the model continued to be produced in Mexico until July 30, 2003. The final car built now resides in the Volkswagen Museum. In total, more than 21 million Beetles were produced.
