Zundapp K 500 med Steib sidovagn 496cc — 1937

A genuine pre-war Zündapp classic with an interesting history. Equipped with a Stihl sidecar. Matching numbers on frame, engine, and gearbox. A startup project will naturally be required, as the motorcycle hasn’t been started since 1965.

Beschreibung

A very exciting and rare motorcycle on Swedish roads. The bike was purchased new by tinsmith Filip Malm on November 30, 1937. It was then registered under the number T 29, and the owner’s residence was Järnboås, Örebro County.

According to local accounts, the motorcycle was used professionally by its owner. The story also tells that the sidecar was mounted already at the time of sale in 1937. Reportedly, the locally well-known tinsmith used the sidecar to carry his sheet metal materials, often consisting of gutters and downpipes. It must have been quite a unique sight seeing him ride around the Järnboås area on his various tin-working jobs.

In 1965, the motorcycle was taken over by the current owner’s uncle. From what we can tell, it was then removed from the register, likely due to unpaid vehicle tax. The bike later passed to the uncle’s brother — the current owner’s father. As far as we can determine, it hasn’t been on the road since 1965.

The current owner inherited the motorcycle after his father’s passing and has since kept it safely stored in his basement for many years. The engine has been periodically kicked over to prevent it from seizing.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

The engine turns over, as previously mentioned. What additional technical work may be required is difficult to determine. Naturally, standard items such as oils, spark plugs, and the battery will need to be replaced.

  • Zustand Interieur:

Considering its early use as a “tinsmith’s motorcycle,” the sidecar is in good condition. The seating surfaces may possibly have been replaced at some point in time.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

Nicely patinated overall. There are a few small dents on each side of the tank. The sidecar fender appears to have been repaired at the rear edge with a newer piece of sheet metal — though it’s uncertain, as this may have been part of the original construction.

  • Zustand gesamt:

A charmingly patinated motorcycle with roots dating back to the pre–World War II era and an interesting history. Some work will naturally be required, but it’s a bike well worth preserving for future generations.

Fakten zum Modell

The Zündapp K 500 stands as one of the true icons of German motorcycle history – a masterpiece of engineering and precision. Founded in 1917 in Nuremberg, Zündapp introduced its new K-series in 1933, with the letter K denoting Kardanantrieb (shaft drive) – an advanced and exclusive choice at a time when most competitors still relied on chains. The K 500 featured a two-cylinder, four-stroke 498 cc engine producing up to 16 hp, housed in a robust pressed-steel frame with shaft drive for exceptional reliability and minimal maintenance. The design was so well balanced that it remained virtually unchanged until 1940.

The model demonstrated Zündapp’s ambition to compete with BMW and DKW, but with its own distinctive character – heavier, tougher, and built for longevity rather than lightness. The K 500 also served as the foundation for later models, including the military K 800.

Today, the K 500 is a rare and highly prized collector’s piece – a true artifact of industrial history where elegance meets engineering excellence. It represents an era when German technology was at its peak, and the Zündapp K 500 remains a lasting symbol of durability, quality, and classic mechanical beauty.
