"Apparently completely rust-free body, with no welding repairs. Expensive full repaint. The engine starts easily and runs well. Mainly the interior is missing."

Beschreibung

This car was purchased in 2014 at the Pomona Swap Meet in Southern California by a Swedish Volvo enthusiast. The car had been in a dry climate since new and was completely rust-free and without damage. It was fully drivable but with sun-faded paint and interior (according to the seller at the time, the engine had been recently rebuilt). The car was imported to Sweden and test-driven in the summer of 2015 before being taken to Ämterud’s workshop in Charlottenberg for technical inspection, service, and registration. See the inspection report in one of the photos.

In 2016 the car was disassembled and received a complete professional repaint, inside, outside, and underneath. After this, the suspension, engine with gearbox, and many details were reinstalled so that the car could be started and driven again. When it came to the interior, the project stalled, and that is why it is now being sold as a project car, with only the enjoyable work left to do.

The car has received a new headliner and new rubber seals around the windows. The dashboard top has been reupholstered. What is mainly missing are carpets, door panels, and other interior parts. The seats are complete but the leather is worn and the seams are split. A nice car to reassemble into driver condition once the missing parts are sourced. It is also a good candidate to make really nice if more time is spent on all the details. Most of the missing parts can be bought from VP Autoparts in Fristad and Harry Hermansson’s Volvo Parts in Falköping. VP also offers ready-made original-style seat upholstery that can be installed yourself. Perfect winter project for the handy enthusiast.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

The car starts easily directly from the engine bay, using a borrowed ignition coil. The original coil is connected to the ignition switch, but unfortunately the keys have been lost during storage in the garage, so this cannot be used at the moment. However, it is easy to replace the ignition switch on the dashboard, since this model year does not have a steering lock. The brakes and part of the exhaust system need to be checked. The handbrake works.

Keys for the door locks are also missing, but if the handles are given to a locksmith, new keys can be made, according to Volvo expert Harry Hermansson in Falköping, who also has used handles with keys for sale.

  • Zustand Interieur:

The dashboard appears well preserved. The instruments were working at the registration inspection in 2015, but have not been tested now. The headliner is new. Carpets and the rest of the interior trim are missing. The driver’s side door window is plexiglass and needs to be replaced.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

Straight and well-preserved body and paint in original specification. The car was repainted almost ten years ago and has since been stored in a garage, so a polishing may be needed. A small, barely visible dent just below the window on the passenger door, see photo. A few pinhead-sized blisters on one spot on top of the trunk lid are the only remarks.

Costly repaint, completely on the outside as well as underneath, in the engine bay, trunk, and interior. The chrome trims that should sit on top of the rear fenders are included with the sale. Also the bumpers, but these are of a somewhat later type. Likewise, the grille insert is of a newer model. The emblems with flags that should sit on the C-pillars are missing but can be purchased from VP, as well as the rearview mirror and other emblems.

  • Zustand gesamt:

Good overall impression. The car can be finished and made usable with simple means. Better starting point than many other P1800s since it has never been damaged or had rust repairs, and is drivable as it stands. With the new parts needed and some minor detailing, you can have a really nice P1800 by next summer. Furthermore, in the same color and specification as the one Roger Moore drove in the famous The Saint films of the 1960s.

Fakten zum Modell

Volvo’s beautiful sports coupé was shown in 1960 and deliveries began in 1962. The first 5,000 cars, up to and including model year 1964, were built under license by Jensen in England. After this, production was moved back to Torslanda. In 1972 the coupé model was replaced by the ES estate version, and production ceased in the autumn of 1973, after about 34,000 cars had been built, of which 6–7,000 were ES versions.

The car was designed by the well-known sailor and designer Pelle Petterson in the late 1950s while he was an intern at the Italian car design company Frua. The main reason production ended in 1973 was the crash safety regulations that came into effect in the USA in 1974. Volvo considered that the car would not look good after being redesigned with the thick bumpers required to withstand impacts of up to 5 km/h.

More than half of all P1800s produced were sold in the USA. The world’s longest documented mileage car according to the Guinness Book of Records is a 1966 Volvo P1800, now on display at World of Volvo in Gothenburg. It has covered 3 million miles (500,000 km).
