"A rare opportunity to acquire a now very scarce vintage police car, featuring all the correct details and in good working condition as a car in its own right."

Beschreibung

This Saab 900 GLi entered service at the Swedish Police Academy in Sörentorp, Solna, in 1984. The training vehicles were equipped in the same way as regular patrol cars. While normal patrol cars were usually in service for only about three years, this one remained in use for eight years. When it was finally sold, the odometer showed 50,000 km.

When police cars are sold off, they are decommissioned and stripped of all police equipment. After changing hands a few times, the car was acquired in 2020 by a police car enthusiast who restored it to its original police appearance and re-equipped it with period-correct police equipment. The blue-yellow-black side stripe applied was genuine New Old Stock (NOS) from the 1980s, while the “POLIS” lettering on the doors was reproduced.

The equipment list is extensive, including: blue light bar, Ericsson C-602 police radio, protective front grille, holders for police gear in the front doors, and an additional passenger-side rear-view mirror. The car also comes with loose police equipment such as a police paddle, two batons, four pairs of handcuffs, call sign register, taxi map, four traffic armbands, four flashlights, tent, shovel, broom, ticket book, two first aid kits, language guide, fire extinguisher, Hepatitis C serum, and flares. All of these details are now highly sought after among collectors.

When the car was restored to police livery, the rear fenders were repainted, but otherwise it remains largely original. As a former police academy vehicle, it still bears some battle scars both on the bodywork and in the cabin, but overall it is a very tidy car.

In 2023, the car came to its current owner, who is now reducing his collection. The car passed its technical inspection in September 2025.

In Sweden, private individuals are allowed to own former police vehicles, but since 2017 there has been a law protecting certain police insignia on motor vehicles. This means that the word “POLIS” must normally be covered when the car is driven in traffic. To display the car at photo sessions, shows, film productions, or similar events, a permit from the police authority is required. This permit is personal to the owner, so it would be up to the new owner to apply for and obtain it. Magnetic covers for the “POLIS” lettering are included with the car.

Also included are Saab’s official police instruction manual and a service book (though not filled in), along with a binder containing various documents. The Saab has been shown at several car exhibitions and comes with a trophy from Classic & Dream Cars. It has also been featured in a major article in Saab Cars Magazine and appears on the cover of the book Saabs polisbilar, in which it is also highlighted in the chapter on the Saab 900. Both the magazine and a copy of the book signed by the author are included with the car. Two sets of keys are provided.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

Started and ran well during the test drive. Engine, automatic transmission, brakes and suspension all functioned as they should. Electrical features such as the cabin fan and windshield wipers were working. The police analogue communication radio is connected. The trip meter is not working, and the odometer currently shows 124,330 km, but according to the owner the reading can occasionally stick, so the figure should be regarded as uncertain.

  • Zustand Interieur:

The interior shows traces of its use as a police car. The headliner has several marks and has come loose slightly at the front. The trim on one of the rear pillars is damaged, and the passenger seat has two small holes.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

The body has several scratches and small dents but very little rust – see for example the photos of the undersides of the doors. A cable feed-through for the roof light bar was likely sealed with a rubber-like compound on the right rear pillar. The rear bumper is missing a trim piece. There are stone chips in the windshield, but not in the driver’s field of vision.

  • Zustand gesamt:

It is not often that a genuine police car from the 1980s comes onto the market, and the fact that this car is largely original and still bears traces of its service makes it even more interesting. Despite the large number of Saab 900s produced, this is today an extremely rare car. Neither the Police Museum’s vehicle collection nor the Saab Car Museum has a Saab 900 with the so-called ‘hockey stick’ livery.

Fakten zum Modell

The first generation Saab 900 was not only the brand’s most-produced model, it also became a very common sight as a police car in Sweden for many years. It was with the predecessor, the Saab 99, that the marque first established itself as a police vehicle, and when the new model entered production in 1979, the police were able to switch to it immediately. At this time, standard patrol cars were usually sedans, so when a sedan version of the Saab 900 was introduced for the 1981 model year, it broadened the model’s role as a police car.

For decades, Swedish police patrol cars had carried a black-and-white livery. In 1984, the National Police Board introduced a reform: police cars would now be all-white with a multicolored stripe. The idea was to save money, both at purchase and when the cars were decommissioned and sold, as they would no longer require a full repaint. The new design was also meant to modernize the image of the police, symbolizing a more open and transparent organization. This was even reflected in the typography of the word POLIS: the letter “P” was open at the back, representing openness.

The new livery soon became known as the “hockey stick,” since the new police stationery with the same color fields resembled one. Among police officers, however, the new look quickly proved unpopular: the cars were less visible in traffic, and the intended savings never materialized. The stripes often tore but left marks in the paint, meaning the cars still had to be repainted when decommissioned.

By 1989, a new blue-and-white livery was introduced, with a more prominent POLIS marking. That same year, the Swedish police began purchasing the new Saab 9000 CD as patrol cars, though the Saab 900 continued in production until 1993.

The Saab 900 in police specification was also an export success. Beyond Sweden and Finland, it also served in the police forces of Dubai, Russia, Taiwan, Oman, and the United States, among others.
