Porsche 924 — 1977

Low-mileage Porsche that has been stored away by a collector since 1998. It has very well avoided rust and sun fading as it has always been stored in a garage.

"Very well-maintained car that hasn't been used for many years, yet it has been regularly serviced and started. Needs an inspection of brakes and electrical systems, as well as a vehicle inspection to be fully roadworthy. Has only driven 95,000 kilometers."

Beschreibung

The car was purchased in this condition in 1998 by a close friend of the current owner. He had a small car collection and drove it very sparingly. When he passed away in 2012, his wife inherited the Porsche and later sold it to the current owner.

He has a fine collection of cars, and it was placed among the other vehicles in dry storage. It has not been driven but has been started up regularly and warmed up. Additionally, regular maintenance has been performed, including a timing belt replacement.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

The car runs well and has been serviced with a timing belt change. The rear brakes are scraping, probably because a brake band has come loose. A warning light for the lighting on the dashboard is on even though all the lights are working.

  • Zustand Interieur:

Original interior in nice unworn condition, only one seam on the driver's seat has come undone. There are also a couple of minimal cracks in front of the steering wheel on the dashboard. Nice to have a period-appropriate Blaupunkt stereo.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

Original paint in a nice unbleached condition. There is some scuffing on the left rear bumper and some minor rust attacks in the lower corners of the doors. The tires have no dry cracks but are old, mounted on nice original rims.

  • Zustand gesamt:

A highly sought-after Porsche in pristine condition that is well worth preserving in this state.

Kommentar vom Besitzer

The Porsche 924 is a 2+2-seater sports car that took over the role previously held by the Porsche 914. The 924 became a great success and saved Porsche from financial collapse. The 924 matured into the 944, which eventually evolved into the 968.

The Porsche 924 was developed at Porsche in collaboration with Volkswagen/Audi and was initially intended to become Audi's flagship model. Porsche not only designed the body and interior but also the chassis and drivetrain. The only requirement from VW/Audi was that the drivetrain had to fit the existing two-liter engine from the Audi 100 and Volkswagen LT. However, due to the oil crisis, VW/Audi got cold feet and sold the entire project to Porsche.

The 924 quickly became known as a well-balanced car to drive. Motor journalists wrote that it was the most manageable Porsche model from the factory to date. The only complaint was about its modest engine power (125 hp), but this criticism subsided when the 924 Turbo model was released (also known as the Porsche 931).

The 924 Turbo looks similar to the 924, but few parts are interchangeable between these two models. For example, Porsche developed a new chassis, installed ventilated disc brakes all around, and designed a new engine where only the casting of the block remained from the 924 engine. However, the 924 Turbo had a short life because it became quite expensive, with both the price and performance comparable to the 911.

The Porsche 944 is an evolution of the 924, featuring an all-aluminum engine designed by Porsche, combined with a somewhat simplified chassis from the 924 Turbo. The Porsche 944 was built alongside the 924, with the 924S model receiving a detuned version of the 944 engine. It turned out that the 924S was faster in both acceleration (due to lower weight) and top speed (due to better aerodynamics) than the 944 with the same engine power. The Porsche 968 became the last model developed from the 924.
