"An incredible original Beetle that still runs beautifully."

Beschreibung

On November 10, 1950, the car dealer Berners in Östersund delivered a new Volkswagen Limousine 11 A to Kjell Eriksson, who lived near Åre in western Jämtland. The model quickly came to be known in popular speech as the “Folkvagn” (People’s Car) and eventually became one of the world’s most produced automobiles. This particular car remained with the same owner until the early 2000s and stayed on the road until 1975, when it was put aside after some minor body damage.

Sometime in the early 1960s, the owner received a couple of grille badges and a wristwatch from the Volkswagen general agent as appreciation for the car having covered 100,000 km without any major engine work. A note in the lubrication card then shows that the gearbox was rebuilt in June 1960, and probably at the same time the car was updated with more modern telescopic rear shock absorbers. Afterwards, the family drove to the Olympic Games in Rome, which is documented by one of many photographs still attached to the car’s rear side windows. The car was clearly used extensively for longer holiday trips.

Sometime after passing 100,000 km, the engine also underwent a rebuild, as it now has oversized pistons (see photo). The current owner has removed one cylinder head to check its condition. The original engine with the correct number is still in the car and runs without issues. The engine number and chassis number differ, and when the authorities introduced new license plates in 1972, the mistake was made of recording the engine number as the chassis number. This error was discovered by the current owner during the origin inspection and registration check, at which point the car was given its current registration plates. The old plates are of course preserved (see photo), and the car is now again registered with the correct chassis number. Finding a car closer to “matching numbers” than this one is hardly possible, considering it has likely covered more than 190,000 km.

At some point in the 1960s, it was repainted in a somewhat darker green shade than the original, which can be seen when opening the luggage compartment and engine lid, where the pastel green factory color remains. The left driver’s door has been replaced, and the front fender swapped for an original unit with the correct round ventilation hole and the special pressing around the headlight. The car naturally shows signs of use but is in surprisingly good condition, even though the floor mats are worn and the headliner a bit stained. The rear seat is virtually unworn, and the front seats are in decent shape. The chassis and the refurbished hydraulic brakes are in good condition (see photos). Also note the period roof rack that has accompanied the car for decades.

The car was taken off the road in 1975 and has since been carefully refurbished by a couple of later owners. Now, this 75-year-old treasure is looking for a new custodian.

Documentation is extensive and includes the original receipt, some lubrication cards, as well as an early accessories brochure and a fold-out sheet about Volkswagen’s exchange system, both stamped by the Berners dealership.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

The hydraulic brakes have been completely refurbished. The engine starts easily and, after a short warm-up at idle, runs smoothly without issues. The gearbox still functions without problems. The exhaust system is of the original single-outlet type and will need attention as it shows some rust. All lights and turn signals are in proper working order. The original keys are included in duplicate, along with the jack and some additional tools.

  • Zustand Interieur:

The original upholstery remains, with the rear seat in very good condition. The front seats are also still in good shape. The fabric headliner is likewise original, showing some age-related staining but relatively intact. The vinyl floor mats are also present, though worn in places (see photos). The dashboard is complete and well-preserved, with a working speedometer and even a clock that still functions. It is spring-driven and wound up when the car is to be used. Taking center stage is a small manual trip meter that likely dates back to the 1950s.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

Patina with many signs of real use, yet the bodywork and chassis remain solid. See photos. The left door and front fender have been replaced. The fender is of the original type, with the specific round ventilation hole in front and the distinctive pressing of the sheet metal around the headlight. In connection with the replacement, parts of the car were repainted in a shade similar to the original. The door is also of the correct model year. There are marks from old bodywork damage, but the car is intact and beautifully patinated.
The bumpers appear to be original, with chrome damaged by rust, but they are still fully usable and add to the car’s charm.

  • Zustand gesamt:

A very solid Volkswagen that still runs well despite its 75 years.
