"A fresh and lively car with just a few things left to do. A big plus is that all the original parts have been kept."

Beschreibung

The Boss Mustang is a legend – it came in two variants, the 302 and the 429. The 302 was developed specifically for Trans Am racing, where the engine was limited to a maximum of five liters. Ford built a specially reinforced engine with four-bolt main caps and other upgrades. It produced relatively little torque but could rev hard – up to 8,000 rpm. To feed it fuel at that pace, a four-barrel 850 cfm carburetor was mounted on the intake.

For 1970, 7,013 cars were built, and this particular example arrived in Sweden brand new. It was bought by a young man named Björn Söderblom in Stockholm. The original registration document has not been found, so the exact story of how the car was imported isn’t entirely clear. Back then, Ford and other manufacturers were not keen on exporting their most extreme models.

This car was first delivered in September 1969 to a dealer in New Jersey. Perhaps that was how you had to go about it if you wanted one of these cars overseas? In any case, this car has all the modifications that Ford of Sweden made to these cars – metric gauges, relocated controls, and more. So we don’t know whether the car was brought in through Ford’s own channels or some other way. According to one source, three Boss 302s came to Sweden at that time.

It was officially registered early in 1970 with the number A85452 – in 1972 it received the new plates and became AGS872. In 1984, the owner crashed it into a guardrail – and the car was then abandoned in a field! There it sat until the early 1990s, when a friend of the owner took it and stored it in a shed. It sat there for many years untouched – and more than ten years later it was sold to a car dealer, who also stored it without doing anything.

In 2012, it was advertised for sale – and the current owner jumped on the ad right away. First it was bought through a company he owned, but to later transfer it to himself as a private person, he arranged for a friend to act as intermediary. So this Mustang has, in practice, only had two actual users since 1970.

Restoration began, and the car was re-registered in 2017. A lot of sheet metal had to be replaced – new fenders and doors were sourced, along with floors, firewall, and inner fenders. The engine was sent off for a complete rebuild. Judging by the original parts that were preserved and some of them still fitted on the car, you can clearly see the damage from all those years it spent out in the field.

The engine was rebuilt by Walléns in Gothenburg. A hotter camshaft was installed, followed by an MSD ignition system, a separate oil cooler, and a set of gauges connected to it – function and peak performance were prioritized over originality. On the dyno, the result was an impressive 377 horsepower at 5,800 rpm at the crank, and 340 at the rear wheels!

The official number from Ford claimed the Boss 302 had a modest 290 SAE net horsepower – at the crank – a figure nobody really believed even back then.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

The heart of the car is of course the special 302" engine. The first owner blew the original engine within a year, and the block was replaced under warranty – the one in the car now is from 1971. The original block and some of the internals are included. The engine was rebuilt in 2015, with receipts and documentation to prove it. At that time, a slightly hotter camshaft was installed. Since then, the engine has been fitted with headers, modern ignition (MSD), an oil cooler mounted in the left front fender, and a larger radiator with electric fans.

However, all of the original parts have been preserved – so everything can be restored back to factory specification. The additional gauges are connected to the modern upgrades, meaning some of the original instruments are currently disconnected.

Just like on the race cars, it also has side-exit exhausts. These are electrically operated and deliver a fantastic sound. Again, all the original parts are included, allowing the car to be returned to its original factory setup.

  • Zustand Interieur:

The interior is largely untouched. Almost nothing was done here during the restoration. An interesting detail is that on Swedish-delivered Mustangs, the wiper and light switches were relocated to the center of the dashboard. The upholstery and panels are original – some details are missing or cracked in the rear section, and a few small pieces are also missing from the dashboard. The front seat has a split in the cushion, while the other seats are in very good condition. New carpet inserts have been fitted. An extra gauge panel has been installed. The original seatbelts are included but not mounted.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

The body has undergone a major sheet metal restoration with a new floor, new firewall, new outer and inner fenders, and new doors (the original fenders and doors are included). Some of the welding underneath is not entirely factory standard but still acceptable. It was repainted in its original color, Competition Yellow, in a professional respray carried out in 2017.

There are a few minor remarks, such as a small blister and some wear that has appeared over time – but overall, the finish is of high quality. There is a small defect beneath the fuel cap, and some cast details such as handles and hinges have developed minor porosity. The bumpers are in excellent condition, while the Magnum 500 wheels show some light surface rust in a few spots.

  • Zustand gesamt:

It’s hard to remain impartial when standing before a bright yellow Ford Mustang Boss 302 – and hearing it sing at the rev range where it feels most at home, between 5,000 and 8,000 rpm. That’s when you truly understand its iconic status – and why it is more sought after than other Mustangs. The Boss Mustang is more than just a special model – it’s a statement, a true child of its era. A time when cars were sold on performance and power rather than reason and emotion – a time that will never return. Muscle cars were at their peak in 1970, and they will forever be remembered.

What makes this one extra special is its full Swedish history. The restoration carried out between 2012 and 2017 was not entirely completed, so there are still a few things left to do. But everything from when the car was first sold new has been preserved.
