Piaggio Vespa 150 GL VLA1T — 1964

Carefully maintained and looked after by a meticulous owner, as well as previously used by someone equally detail-oriented. Together, they logged 33,800 kilometers, keeping the scooter in a charming condition that, in a positive and paradoxical way, doesn’t quite reflect the mileage.

"A relatively common scooter on the market when new, but a much rarer find today. Its condition and provenance contribute to that distinction, but perhaps most of all, it’s the unique configuration for the Swedish market that makes it stand out."

Beschreibung

It was sold new to its first owner in August 1964, a Tore August Rantzén from Gothenburg. He was the one who covered the majority of the total mileage and must have been just as meticulous and caring as the next owner, the current one (now an estate), who purchased the scooter in 1980. According to the owner’s mother and daughter, he polished and waxed it almost every week. With such care, it’s no surprise that a vehicle is well-preserved, though it’s still quite rare. All the better for posterity, and hopefully for a buyer or collector who can appreciate both the provenance and condition, whether it’s lightly used or finds its way to a museum of appropriate stature, like the factory museum in Pontedera.

The latest inspection was completed on 2006-07-13, and two years later, the scooter was stored in a heated garage, where it has remained since. Today, the scooter is in the care of a serious enthusiast and authority on Piaggio’s historic scooters in Sweden. He has removed various accessories and restored the Vespa to its original configuration. The accessories, visible in the photos, are included. Additionally, for those nostalgic for original details, there’s a stylish, large two-line registration plate ready to be mounted if desired.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

The engine turns over, starts, and fires up with a splash of fuel directly into the carburetor, but we haven’t wanted to fully start it with fuel in the tank. The carburetor and fuel tap should be properly cleaned, and parts that are necessary, such as the tap seals and the needle valve in the carburetor (which can be affected by long periods of inactivity and modern fuel quality), should be replaced. The jets should be cleaned using either ultrasonic cleaning or compressed air—no steel or copper wires should be used in the jets, as the small tolerances can be damaged by metal impact. The brakes work well, with the relative sharpness typical of older scooters like this one.

  • Zustand Interieur:

The scooter still has its original single saddles that it was delivered with, both in excellent condition with the emblems intact. All keys are present and work well with the steering lock and glove compartment lock. The original grips are stylish, with a bit of patina, and the same goes for the rubber seals. The seals between the panels and the body show some aesthetically pleasing dryness but still have their original fit.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

The untouched original paint in a beautiful light blue shade called Blu Medio 216 remains intact. The rims and brake drums were also painted in this color when delivered, though today they are silver. Reportedly, this color was exclusive to the export version of the 150 GL sent to Sweden and… Malaysia. For a collector and enthusiast, this is a significant detail—so important, in fact, that according to an authority in the field, this particular example “should be in the Pontedera museum,” referring to Piaggio’s museum in Italy.

We’ve carefully inspected the scooter; the running-in decal, remnants of a factory control sticker just above the engine, and the seams and folds all point to it being the original, untouched paint. The frame number beneath the left side panel is somewhat difficult to read but clear enough for an inspection.

  • Zustand gesamt:

A well-preserved scooter in the kind of condition every enthusiast dreams of finding. There are many buyers who are financially motivated yet operate with a flexible conscience, reaching out through various channels, letters, and other crafty methods, claiming they are searching for “just such a scooter” for their collection or because “my father had one like this.” In reality, their intention is a carefully planned business move for resale. If they were just honest about their motives and made it clear, everyone could deal with it accordingly.

That’s why it’s especially satisfying to offer this rare example to the global scooter scene in an open and transparent manner.

Fakten zum Modell

A 150 GL with the frame number prefix VGLA1T and the unique light blue color was an export version for Sweden. According to a scooterist who rode frequently with clubs during that time, “club members and enthusiasts rode the sportier Vespas, like the SS180, GS160, and Rally. Students and older gentlemen rode the 150 GL.”
