Lamborghini Espada 400 GT serie 2 V12 — 1971

Exclusive and attractive four-seater grand tourer with bold and exciting design from a lively Bertone studio. Interesting history with well-documented records from its first six active years in Italy, as well as its five registered years in Sweden. Altogether, it has been in traffic for only around 10 years out of a total of 54 years, with the first registration in 1970.

"A historically interesting model, this example boasts a colorful history and a somewhat unfortunate fate of being stationary for many years. However, there is still much potential to be appreciated by a serious new owner."

Beschreibung

It was registered and delivered new in the province of Ferrara, north of Bologna, Italy, in October 1970. If the well-preserved Italian documents have been interpreted correctly, the car had three owners in Italy. For a historically inclined new owner, there’s a lot of fun to be had by further investigating these documents. The current owner's father bought the car in 1976, reportedly from a baroness in Rome, Anna Maria Longo, the third owner. The car was imported and had 56,040 kilometers on the odometer at its first inspection. It was driven on Swedish roads for 14,000 kilometers over four years, and today the odometer reads 70,040 kilometers. For some reason, the car was registered in the name of a friend of the owner for a couple of years. In 1979, the car was stolen, and a few days later it was found, but all the wheels and carburetors were gone. The owner himself went down to Lamborghini to purchase new parts, and the invoice is still available. The Swedish history of the car can be further detailed if desired. A search in the National Archives' vehicle register for the period 1972-1994 reveals 12 events recorded, which can be ordered for a small fee. https://bestall.riksarkivet.se/sv/fordon-efter1972. The most recent approved inspection was on September 6, 1978, and the car was decommissioned on January 24, 1980. The current owner took over the car in 1981. Since then, it has been off the road, resting.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

The V12 engine has been started with a range of initial measures, but no full service has been carried out. It starts relatively easily but doesn’t run completely smoothly and has an exhaust system leak. With a thorough service, inspection, and proper review, the engine can likely regain the power and function it once had in its original state without needing a comprehensive rebuild. The gearbox and clutch feel surprisingly responsive given the long period of inactivity, but they also require a check-up and oil service. The entire braking system is in need of a renovation, as currently only the parking brake is functioning.

  • Zustand Interieur:

The light-colored interior features good carpets and a nice headliner. The driver's seat is well-worn, with cracks in both the seams and cushion. The passenger seat also has a few cracked seams, as do the door panels. Together with the rear seat and the rest of the interior, they are in need of cleaning. In the trunk, there are carpets to fit, panels to glue, and some panels that have dried out and need attention. The original keys are missing, and a temporary ignition lock has been installed.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

Repainted in the early eighties after the car was stolen. There are small bubbles above the driver's door due to the period-typical spray filler. The Campagnolo magnesium wheels are secured with a large center nut, and there were also stylish three-pronged wing nuts available. Two tools for the nuts are included. The right front wheel suffered a scratch during a move between two garages. The chrome and glass are in good condition, and there’s a nice period-appropriate two-row license plate at the back.

  • Zustand gesamt:

With 1,217 units produced between 1968 and 1978, the model is still considered a successful mass-production venture from the brand at the time. The overall impression of this example is that it is a representative and interesting item with good potential and an intriguing provenance for a new owner.

Fakten zum Modell

Lamborghini has a tradition of naming its cars after bulls and bullfighting, and the Espada is no exception. Espada means "sword" in Spanish, referring to the sword used by the matador to kill the bull. The Espada was Lamborghini's most successful model to date, keeping the company afloat during a tumultuous period for the automotive world in the 1970s. Over its ten years in production, the car was divided into three different series: S1 (1968–1970), S2 (1970–1972), and S3 (1972–1978). Each series featured a new interior design, minor mechanical improvements, and slight exterior changes.

The auction car is a Series 2, with 575 units produced out of the total 1,217 manufactured. This is a modest figure in the automotive world but significant for the small manufacturer in Sant'Agatha, Bologna. This made the Espada the best-selling Lamborghini model until the Countach production ramped up in the mid-1980s.

Fun fact: The beloved actor and car enthusiast Carl-Gustaf Lindstedt (1921-1992) owned a white Series 2 Espada for several years. His car was later exported and disappeared abroad.
