Volvo Pv 544 Sport G — 1966

Helrenoverad PV 544 Sport med den magiska beteckningen G. Att den dessutom är pärlvit gör den riktigt ovanlig och eftertraktad.

"Probably as close as you can get to the feeling of driving it brand new in 1966. I can't find anything that requires attention. My recommendation to the buyer is to actually use the car from time to time and not just keep it as a collector's item. Naturally, there's a risk of getting stone chips and wear, but one must weigh that risk against the joy of being able to drive their Volvo PV Sport on a beautiful summer evening."

Beschreibung

This 1966 PV Sport has an interesting history. It was originally sold to a Mr. Rolfs in Lappträsk. It was registered on October 6, 1965, with the license plate BD 71912, indicating that the car was located in Norrbottens County, according to the then-existing county registry. Two years later, the car ended up in Kiruna. In 1979, it made its way to Värmland. In 1989, it was taken off the road and stored in a garage until 2014 when the current owner purchased it and began the renovation, which was completed two years later.

1966 marked the final model year for the Volvo PV 544. These were manufactured in the autumn of 1965 and were designated as the 'G' model. On October 20, the last car rolled off the assembly line. Production of the G model amounted to 3,400 units, with 435 of them being the Sport 11234G variant. Among these, 114 were pearl white Sports, making this PV Sport considerably rarer than if it had been red.

Since new, the car has had six owners, including a car dealer. The current odometer reading is 3,665 Swedish miles. After examining the accompanying older inspection reports and considering that the original engine did not need to be bored during the restoration, there was a brief consideration that the odometer had only completed one full revolution, suggesting 13,665 miles. Upon closer examination, it's more likely that it has gone around twice, totaling 23,665 miles. Given the meticulous restoration work, the mileage becomes more of a philosophical question.

The car lacks an instruction manual. Included with the car is the original registration certificate from 1965 and older inspection reports as shown in the images.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

The original sport engine, a B18 equipped with dual SU carburetors, producing 95 hp, has undergone a complete overhaul. It's equipped with a classic Nisse Hedlund camshaft, which is roughly equivalent to a Volvo K-cam. The cylinder head has been planed by 1.5 mm to improve compression. Steel cam gears were also installed, resulting in a slightly louder engine note. (Those with steel gears and all the accomplished rally drivers of the time had steel cam gears to avoid failures.)

It's equipped with a sports exhaust system and a dynamo for improved reliability. The keen-eyed observer will notice that the carburetors are the correct ones, but with later, thicker air filter housings installed. The owner made this modification to allow for better airflow into the engine, which enhances performance. The rear axle and gearbox have been overhauled by SVIS in Munktorp.

Every technical aspect of the car has been thoroughly inspected and renovated. Most components have been replaced with new or NOS (New Old Stock) parts. It runs smoothly on the road with distinct gear shifts and strong engine performance. There are no issues to report.

  • Zustand Interieur:

The interior appears in pristine condition. The rear seat is the original one from 1966. The door panels, headliner, and upholstery for the front seats come from the reputable VP Autoparts. The elusive rubber floor mats are New Old Stock (NOS). The sport steering wheel is from the era and not a reproduction. The three additional gauges under the dashboard are not connected; the owner installed them purely for nostalgia, and they can be easily removed with two screws.

The car is equipped with a cassette radio from the brand Roadstar King, which has a special history, as mentioned by the owner.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

The car was professionally repainted in 2015, and the paint still maintains a high-quality finish. At the same time, 5.5-inch rims were installed with new tires. Two of the rims are the classic KPZ type, while the others are of more recent production. The body is straight and in excellent condition, with precise panel fit and door gaps. The chrome and bright trim are of a high standard.

The rear bumper is NOS (New Old Stock), and the front one is original. The grille is also original, as seen in the photos. It's equipped with Bosch Rallye 180 swiveling auxiliary lights. These lights were introduced during the second half of the 1960s and are considered period-appropriate.

  • Zustand gesamt:

A very impressive restoration where the aim was to achieve originality, and the successful procurement of hard-to-find NOS parts, combined with extensive knowledge and a deep appreciation for the car model, has resulted in an outstanding outcome. This restoration is sure to captivate even the most discerning PV enthusiast.

Kommentar vom Besitzer
