Beschreibung

This car was imported from the USA and pre-registered in Sweden in 2017, which is when the current owner bought it. He had been searching for a Sonett in solid, original condition, and with help from fellow Saab enthusiasts he decided to undertake a full mechanical renovation.

The original engine was replaced with a Matti Pajula–tuned unit, sourced with the help of Mr. Hellgren, well known in Saab racing circles. This engine is estimated to produce around 90 hp today. The gearbox has been fully renovated, the wiring replaced, upgraded indicators fitted, and all hoses, gaskets, and worn components reviewed and replaced as needed. The brake system has also been fully overhauled, and the car was fitted with a custom-built 2" exhaust system.

The interior was already in good, original condition and simply needed cleaning. Today it only requires a headliner to be fitted and some trim re-glued in the boot area. Otherwise, it presents very nicely and retains the original adjustable lumbar cushions.

Underneath, the car is solid with signs of older welding repairs around the sills and boot floor — very typical on these cars. The body and paint are in good overall condition, likely repainted many years ago in the USA. It has been kept as-is and polished, and the pop-up headlights work perfectly.

The goal was to build a fun, reliable, driver-focused Sonett, and that has absolutely been achieved. The car passed its final inspection in 2019 and since then has been enjoyed during the summers at local shows and of course various Saab meets.

Background
Like most Sonett III cars, this example began its life in the USA. Saab built just over 8,000 Sonett Mark 3s between 1970 and 1974. Early models used the 1500 V4, later replaced by the 1700 V4 to meet US emission rules while still retaining approximately 65 hp. Around 80% of production went to the American market.

Around ten years ago, many Sonett IIIs were imported back to Sweden when prices in the US were attractive. Today the situation has changed — higher US prices and expensive shipping have almost halted imports, making it far easier (and cheaper) to buy one already in Sweden.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

    The engine starts easily and runs well, just needing a few minutes to warm up properly. You can clearly hear that it’s more tuned than standard, especially out on the road. The car drives well with stable handling, good gear shifts and solid brakes. It has always been kept in top running condition, regularly cared for by the owner and other Saab enthusiasts, and stored in a warm garage. Fitted with nice alloy wheels and good tyres all round. It’s inspection-exempt and ready for its next owner.

  • Zustand Interieur:

    Interior is all original with good seats and the adjustable backrests intact, with no damage. It has nice carpets and trim, and the boot area has tidy vinyl paneling with only a few small marks from use. The side upper panels are loose on both sides and just need re-gluing. The door cards are in good condition, with metal plates fitted over the old speaker holes.

    The dashboard is completely original with the correct gauges; no radio is fitted — the only soundtrack you get is the engine. There is some paint cracking around the 3 round gauges, and the car is not currently fitted with a headliner, which is easy to reinstall if desired. To top it off, the car is dry inside and completely smell-free.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

    A big bonus with these cars is the plastic bodywork — no rust issues to worry about. Like most Sonetts, it does have the typical small clear-coat cracks dotted around the panels, a common ageing issue on virtually all examples. No major damage to report, though there are signs of an older repair on the front left wing. The paintwork is bright and clean overall, with the noted small cracks and some slight flaking around the black section at the rear near the bumper. The glass is all in good condition.

    Both doors would benefit from some adjustment and alignment. The blue-painted sills were a personal choice by the owner, and the car also wears a few custom stickers.

  • Zustand gesamt:

    These cars are seriously cool and attract a lot of attention — many people have never even seen one in real life. It’s a fun car to own and a fun car to drive. Nothing needs attention right now; just hop in and enjoy it.

Important to know before placing your bids!
  • Once you have called in an item and the reservation price is reached we want you to deposit the entire purchase amount into our client funds account before retrieval can take place.
  • When you need to retrieve a called in object we want you to examine it carefully. If you consider that the item does not match our description you do not need to complete the purchase. In this case the deposited purchase sum and the entry fee are refunded.
  • If you do not examine the item on the spot the call charge will be debited, but you do not have to complete the deal.
