BMW 2002 tii Schnitzer 2.0 — 1972

Quite possibly the rarest version of the 2002 Tii in existence. No other examples have been found for sale or in auction records, making this an exceptionally interesting and highly collectible car for any BMW enthusiast.

"This car has undergone an obsessive, nearly 20-year restoration, carried out with a fanatic level of detail. NOS parts were hunted down whenever possible, and specialist rebuilders handled every major component. Back when it was new, this Schnitzer-tuned BMW 2002 cost around 45,000 SEK — virtually the same as a Porsche 911. That alone says everything about its exclusivity, performance, and the serious intent behind this build."

Beschreibung

Delivered new in Gothenburg in November 1971, at the time a brand-new model equipped with a fuel-injection engine producing 131 hp costing 29518 SEK (according to the receipt) to Lars Hägg, a young man of good means. During spring/summer of 1972, the car was sent to Schnitzer in Germany for tuning and modification. They also worked on the car in 1973, adding various equipment — all of which can be followed through the preserved invoices costing approx 8900 DM back then approx 15000 SEK. Schnitzer was one of Germany’s two leading tuning companies at the time, with Alpina as their main competitor. Both built race cars, but this car has never been raced. (It was most likely intended as a “street racer” — like an M3, but 15 years ahead of its time…)

Mr. Hägg owned the car in 1993, at which time the odometer showed approximately 98,000 km. This mileage is supported by inspection records preserved throughout the years.

The second owner, Mr Sönegård, later sold the car to a colleague and close friend of the current owner, Mr Fabricius, who purchased it in the autumn of 2000. Over the following 15 years, Mr Fabricius collected an impressive number of new old stock (NOS) parts — all sourced directly from BMW in Sweden and Germany. Importantly, no inexpensive aftermarket parts were used.

Many of the components he managed to find are now virtually unobtainable today, including a complete original grille, a factory wiring harness (including the section for the fuel-injection system), and numerous other large and small items that would make a similar restoration extremely costly today.

However, the car was already in very good condition when he acquired it, allowing most parts to be reinstalled after a professional repaint, carried out approximately 15 years ago by a specialist paint shop in Gothenburg.

Another detail that makes this car unique is that it has never been welded for rust, which is something we have never seen on a car of this model — they rusted terribly. We believe it was never driven in winter, and in Gothenburg everything rusts fast. The low mileage also suggests limited use. What truly makes this car special, however, is of course the Schnitzer involvement. We have contacted several people who have been experts on this model for decades, and none of them have ever heard of another one like it. The other cars were built for rally or track use. We have not found evidence of another coming up for sale — our research goes back about 40 years. The fact that we have documentation proving its authenticity is a major advantage. (One could build something similar in a garage, but it would never be the same — and would be extremely costly.)

The upgrades carried out by Schnitzer include:
Larger radiator
Oil cooler
Camber modification
Anti-roll bars
Springs
Group 2 front brakes
Rear disc brakes (from Peugeot 504, which already had rear discs that early!)
Battery relocated to the boot
KN air filter
Front and rear stabilizer bars
Three additional instruments
5-speed dogleg sport gearbox
Tuned 8-valve sport engine
Adjustable brake bias
Extractor header
LSD plate differential
FPS Alloy Wheels

The current owner acquired the car ten years ago, becoming its fourth owner from new. When purchased, the car was essentially ready after the repaint but had not yet been fully assembled. He entrusted the final assembly to specialist workshops in Ulricehamn and Borås, a process that took around three years of careful and detailed work.

The engine had already been fully overhauled by BMW specialist Olof Lager in Gothenburg. According to him, the unit was in excellent condition but still received new bearings, gaskets, and seals throughout.

The car was completed in 2019 and passed its final inspection with a mileage of 4,420 km. Since then, it has been sparingly driven, used only for light summer outings and local events.

The available documentation does not specify exactly what Schnitzer did when building the “Sport Engine”, but experts on the subject suggest that the conversion would have included: modifications to the Kugelfischer injection system for increased fuel delivery, a ported and skimmed cylinder head, larger intake valves, a sport camshaft with approximately 300° duration, and an extractor exhaust manifold.

At some point during the 1970s, the original cylinder head most likely cracked or warped—a common issue with these engines. A new blank head, dated 1979, was subsequently sourced directly from BMW and then modified to the same Schnitzer specification, most likely by Schnitzer themselves. Also included are several rare spare parts — make sure to check the pictures.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

The engine starts immediately and runs well, only needing a few minutes to warm up properly. On the road it feels extremely solid, with a tight, smooth-shifting gearbox, a good clutch, strong brakes, and responsive handling. The engine also delivers a nice, clean sound through the rev range. The engine bay still looks almost new — very well kept and fully original. The alloy wheels were recently refurbished and are in top condition, fitted with good tyres. The owner has maintained the car in excellent running order, driving it around 500 km per year. It’s inspection-exempt and ready to go.

  • Zustand Interieur:

Interior is in outstanding, fully original condition with no damage anywhere — seats, door cards, carpets, and headliner all look great. It’s fitted with a sporty steering wheel, and the original wheel comes with the car. The dashboard is completely original and damage-free, with all gauges working as they should. Only a touch of light paint wear is visible around the volt, oil-pressure, and temperature gauges.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

Bodywork is straight with good-fitting doors and even panel gaps and no rust. The car was fully repainted in its original colour around 15 years ago, and according to the owner it has never been welded — something that’s consistent with the clean, damage-free underbody. The paintwork still looks great with no damages, and the chrome trim is bright and spotless throughout. The only small remark is that parts of the rubber door seals have lifted slightly and just need to be glued back in place (see pictures).

  • Zustand gesamt:

This is an exceptionally rare car, restored with real passion, expertise, and countless hours of careful work. A dream find for any collector or BMW enthusiast who wants something genuinely special and unlike anything else on the market.

Fakten zum Modell

BMW 2002 is one of the brand’s most significant models, produced between 1968 and 1976 as part of the so-called 02 Series. It came to define BMW’s sporty identity through its combination of low weight, rear-wheel drive, and lively four-cylinder engines, most often 2.0-liter units with carburetors or – in the tii version – mechanical fuel injection. With its simple yet well-balanced construction, the 2002 offered precise handling and quickly became popular among enthusiasts and in circuit racing. The model contributed to BMW’s international success during the 1970s and is today regarded as an icon among classic sports and enthusiast cars.

The BMW 2002 tii Schnitzer was a specially tuned version of BMW’s iconic 2002 model, developed by the renowned racing firm AC Schnitzer in the early 1970s. Starting from the fuel-injected 2002 tii, Schnitzer equipped the car with extensive engine upgrades, often including modified injection, higher compression, and more aggressive camshafts that significantly increased power compared to the standard model.
