Beschreibung

It was imported from England to Sweden in November 1987. The car changed hands a couple of times rather quickly, and in 1988 it was purchased by the owner who has now entrusted the current seller to find an enthusiast willing to do what’s needed and desired. The car is drivable but currently deregistered; its most recent and final approved inspection was carried out on June 30, 2022, meaning it was within its valid inspection period when, under current regulations, it became inspection-exempt in 2023.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

Mechanically functional, in an older English roadster everything sounds a bit closer and louder, and it feels lively in both engine and gearbox. The body sags slightly on the driver’s side—a fairly typical characteristic for this type of car.

  • Zustand Interieur:

Worn interior in both seats and carpets; a new carpet set and seat upholstery are easy to find from several suppliers. The wooden steering wheel is intact but would probably appreciate a fresh coat of varnish, and the wooden parts of the dashboard could also use some polishing.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

The paint was a bit dull, according to the owner, so the car was given a polish. It has been partially repainted at some point. Otherwise, it presents well in yellow, though there are visible signs of corrosion on the lower edge of the right-hand door and partly on the sill. The soft top is intact, with slightly cloudy plastic windows, and comes with a neat and well-fitting top cover. A tonneau cover is also included—intact in both stitching and fabric, but in need of a thorough cleaning. Older Yokohama tires with good tread.

  • Zustand gesamt:

An unembellished but solid car in good basic condition for continued ownership and care—ready to drive and enjoy.

Fakten zum Modell

BMC had shown how to easily build a small and affordable sports car based on standard components when they transformed an ordinary Austin A35 into the cheerful Austin-Healey Sprite. Confident they could repeat that success, Triumph set out to build a sports car based on their new small car, the Herald. Giovanni Michelotti had already designed an attractive open body in 1957, and since the Herald had a separate frame, it was easy to replace the standard body with a sports car body.

The engine was tuned with the help of twin carburetors, and in October 1962, production of the Spitfire began. To keep costs down, the car was built in a simple, straightforward manner—something customers actually appreciated. Less popular was the tricky swing-axle rear suspension, another inheritance from the Herald. In a modest family car, the setup worked well enough, but combined with a stronger engine in a lightweight body, it resulted in severe oversteer, earning the Spitfire a fair amount of criticism for its handling during spirited driving.

In November 1970, the Mark IV model was introduced, featuring a redesigned rear end, a more elegant dashboard, and—finally—a fully synchronized gearbox. Most appreciated of all, however, was the revised rear suspension, which largely eliminated the worst of the oversteer.
