Riley RMC Roadster 2,5 — 1950

A rare English car in a version that’s also unusual for the model, presented in nicely preserved and well-maintained condition. Interestingly, what makes it rare is that it’s right-hand drive — as the model was primarily intended for the large American market, very few right-hand-drive examples were built.

"Surprisingly easy to drive, with well-defined gear positions and a clear clutch feel. The brakes perform as they did back in the day, as does the steering — but with a bit of sensitivity and focus, it’s still a fun and engaging car to drive in today’s traffic."

Beschreibung

It was delivered new in Sweden in 1950, and the current owner’s father purchased the car in 1971 from Liffners Bil at Chapmans Torg in Gothenburg. At the time, he traded in his MGA Roadster and paid the difference. Over the years, he drove the Riley on several trips, including a long journey to Spain together with a few friends in an Armstrong Siddeley — on which both cars managed the impressive feat of overheating and boiling over in Paris’ Friday rush hour. Helpful Parisians with great sympathy for vintage cars made that adventure truly memorable.

Since then, the car has been a steady companion in the family — for trips, rallies, gatherings, weddings, graduations, and celebrations. The current owner’s mother recalls riding home from the maternity ward in the car, with her newborn daughter in her arms, while the midwife wondered, “Are you really going to drive in that car?”

The family has been searching for more documentation on the Riley but has not yet found any — the search continues. There is, however, a considerable collection of spare parts, including an extra engine and gearbox. For those interested, the car’s history prior to 1971 can easily be traced through the Swedish National Archives (Riksarkivet).

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

The engine starts instantly without choke and preferably without touching the accelerator. It responds well, the clutch engages clearly, and it’s easy to control the long car at the biting point even on an incline, both in first gear and reverse. A modern electric fan mounted in front of the radiator allows for trouble-free city driving. The car features a positive-ground 12-volt electrical system as standard — Lucas was an early adopter of 12 volts, which was already common on many British vehicles as far back as the 1930s.

  • Zustand Interieur:

Beautifully aged and nicely patinated interior after more than 50 years as an enthusiast’s car. The wood on the dashboard is in good condition, and the original miles-speedometer remains, even though the unit of speed isn’t indicated. The top speed was listed as 160 km/h or 100 mph, and the speedometer ends at 100. Leather driving caps and goggles are included.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

Solid and attractive paint in Old English White, resprayed during the winter of 1978–1979 from what was then a nougat brown color. The chrome is in good condition, and the convertible top is intact and clean, made of sturdy brown canvas. It’s fitted with period-correct diagonal tires that still have good tread. The illuminated semaphore indicators work perfectly.

  • Zustand gesamt:

Impressive in its long and elegant way, and a true roadster with just enough weather protection — exactly as it should be. Stylish and dignified, it’s one of a kind as a roadworthy example in Sweden, with only one other known car whose status is uncertain.

Fakten zum Modell

The Riley RMC Roadster was an open two-door version of the extended RMB model, featuring a full-width front bench seat for up to three people, a long sweeping rear end, and a fold-down windshield. It was introduced in March 1948 but arrived too late in Geneva to be exhibited at that year’s Geneva Motor Show. The model was primarily designed for and aimed at the American export market and was built in left-hand drive with a column-mounted gear lever. The bonnet and radiator were lowered, and the hood latches were luxuriously operated from the driver’s seat. Additional horns were mounted on the bumpers, and the fuel tank capacity was increased to 91 liters.

Eighteen months later, in September 1949, Riley announced that future production would also include a small quota of right-hand-drive versions with a floor-mounted gear lever. Riley attributed this privilege to its home market, thanks to a slight improvement in the otherwise limited postwar steel supply. The car came with a sporty, lightweight soft top and plexiglass side screens with cutouts for hand signals. It shared the RMD model’s 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with twin overhead camshafts, producing 100 hp and a top speed of 160 km/h. A little over 500 RMCs were built between 1948 and 1951, and among them, the right-hand-drive examples — such as this auction car — are the rarest.
