Beschreibung

Here is a radio-equipped all-terrain vehicle with the military designation 9033, intended for radio communication and equipped with a 24-volt electrical system. It also featured a radio receiver 920 (FM radio) for receiving LUFOR, an acronym for Air Defense Orientation and Air Situation Orientation, which was an older system used to transmit air situation information. This system was in use from the mid-1950s until 1989.

A 2.15-meter whip antenna for shortwave radio communication was mounted on the roof for use while driving. Two antenna mounts with matching units for ultra-high-frequency radio communication were located on the rear panel. An access panel on the rear allowed for external antennas for shortwave and ultra-high-frequency radio, which could also be remotely operated using a 25-meter extension cable on a reel.

The vehicle remains entirely original, except for the removal of the military radio equipment. It was part of the defense forces until 1998 and has since had five enthusiastic civilian owners, with the current owner acquiring it in September 2021. He has used it sparingly as a 'showpiece' for his business, CVI Automotive AB (Volvo product sales). The mileage currently stands at 42,320 kilometers, which is reported to be accurate according to previous owners. When the current owner purchased the vehicle, the choke needed attention, which was promptly addressed. A year before leaving military service, the vehicle underwent a Basic Inspection by the Swedish Defense Materiel Administration, and it passed civilian inspection without any issues on August 30, 2021. The vehicle comes with a set of off-road wheels (rims and tires), a manual, and various documents.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

Starts easily and runs smoothly in both engine and drivetrain. Traditional and 'bulletproof' B18 engine, here with the reliable Zenith carburetor. The low gear hasn't been tested, but it is reported to work well. All functions appear to be working as they should. During a test drive at a moderate pace, it performed flawlessly and was surprisingly easy to drive. However, the gear lever and pedals require slightly more 'deliberate movements' than a regular car. It hasn't been driven much in recent years, so an inspection and service are recommended. Although it hasn’t been checked on a lift, it’s possible to see fairly well, and the essential parts appear to be in good condition.

  • Zustand Interieur:

The interior is in a robust, original configuration with a wealth of interesting solutions designed for its military purpose, featuring a multitude of details. Apart from the radio equipment, everything seems to be intact, including a camouflage net intended for use in the field. Everything is in good condition, and most functions are operational, including gauges and controls. The heater, windshield washer, etc., are sourced from various Volvo models that were in production at the time. The windshield and sunroof should work as intended, but during inspection, we didn’t want to force the mechanisms. They may possibly be 'winterized.'

  • Zustand Exterieur:

According to information in its original condition and it looks good with normal wear and tear for its area of use, age, and mileage. The model is robust and solidly built. The function of the headlights and lighting details needs to be reviewed. If one wishes to drive off-road, a set of rims with coarser tires is included. The age of these and the currently mounted tires is uncertain.

  • Zustand gesamt:

A vehicle from the era when 'our preparedness was truly strong,' with most of the equipment, both large and small, manufactured here in Sweden. The history and condition of this vehicle make it a piece of Swedish military and automotive history. A robust classic and a high-caliber enthusiast's vehicle.

Fakten zum Modell

The Volvo Valp was manufactured between 1961 and 1974, becoming one of the Swedish military's most versatile vehicles. It was powered by a standard B18 engine and a reinforced M40 gearbox with a ZF transfer case, equipped with high and low ranges and selectable four-wheel drive. The axles were durable copies of the American Dana axles, license-manufactured by British Salisbury.

In serial production, the Valp was named L3314, and soon there was also a version designed for anti-armor operations and another with a higher total weight, the L3315. Civilian versions were named Laplander and were primarily purchased by fire departments and certain government agencies.

The upgraded L3315 version featured a 24-volt electrical system with dual batteries, an extra-large alternator, radio-suppressed ignition system, hand throttle, and a master power switch. Due to its higher total weight, it was fitted with stronger leaf springs, a vacuum brake servo, and a steering damper, which improved handling and allowed the military to increase the maximum permitted speed to 80 km/h.

When Volvo ceased production of the Valp, they quickly realized the civilian market was not yet saturated. In 1977, they outsourced production of a modernized Valp, named the C202, to the Hungarian company Csepel Auto.
