It was delivered new somewhere in Los Angeles in 1969, probably in Santa Monica if you look at where it was serviced the first few times. The previous owner bought the car used in the mid-seventies and brought it home in 1980 as moving goods after 11 years as a golf instructor at the historic Lakeside Golf Club in Hollywood, where he instructed show business stars of the time such as Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, Johnny Weissmüller, Evil Knievel and Mac Davis. Among others. The latter was a musician who wrote much of Elvis' song material, including In the Ghetto. This Davis also had a red SL Pagoda with the number plate IN T GHETTO and when the owner wanted to repaint his car in Sweden from original silver after paint damage, he was inspired by Davis' car and chose a red Mercedes colour, Signal red 568.

The current owner is the estate of Paul and Irene who bought the Pagoda to celebrate their wedding anniversary, they got married in 1969, the same model year as the car. They were a flamboyant couple, who with an eighties expression would have been called DINKY; Double Income, No Kids. The pagoda was used for some time in the summer between 2000 and 2011, then it was put away and has been in a well-ventilated, dry and warm garage until now. One has to assume they simply found it more convenient to drive their modern Mercedes 500 CL coupe and BMW 850i, the latter registered and stationed at the couple's residence in Spain.

An SL Pagoda in an American version can be recognized, among other things, by slightly different headlight glass, the side marker lights, transverse rubber bumper horns, solid red taillights and a cargo shelf behind the seats instead of two small rear seats. The last approved inspection and thus also the last one was done very recently, in October 2022.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

    The car has been started after a cleaning and overhaul of the fuel pump, the empty tank was replaced with fresh petrol and a new filter. The engine feels lively and responds well. The automatic transmission shifts well, but the linkage may need to be adjusted. The brake hoses have been replaced, they had swollen in the more than ten years of storage and were completely tight. Now the brakes feel stable and even. As I said, it is ready to drive and recently inspected, but an oil and fluid service on the entire car is recommended. Furthermore, the tyres are neither completely round nor fresh after the standstill. A set of new quality tires will elevate the driving experience.

  • Zustand Interieur:

    Thick black and surprisingly comfortable sheepskin covers cover the similarly black and fine vinyl upholstery. The vinyl upholstery (MB Tex) was not unusual on the model, even if you think that it was often leather upholstery. Stylish original Becker radio with uncertain function. A bunch of aftermarket speakers behind the seats, and the high beam switch is a rocker switch. In the boot, there are alarm units with sirens and horns that look very loud. The previous owner had the alarm fitted but does not remember how it worked, and we have not found any signs of how it operates.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

    Qualitatively repainted in the original Mercedes colour Signal red 568 by recognized talented Ullareds Billackering and it is also noticeable today, the paint just exudes quality. The hardtop was painted at the same time. and matches nicely. The soft top appears to be original, it is beautifully faded and patinated with some small wear marks, but fine and fully functional with a good fit.

  • Zustand gesamt:

    Exciting Pagoda in good, ready-to-drive condition and also with the most sought-after and strongest engine equipment in the model series.

Fakten zum Modell

Med formgivning av legendariske Paul Bracq och grundteknik från fenmodellen blev resultatet mycket lyckat för Pagodan – eller W113 som den heter på Mercedesspråk.

Motorn hade sin grund i den vanliga sedanmodellen och ihop med pendelaxlar bak hade man skapat en sportbil som var betydligt sportigare än tidigare generationen SL. Detta var en modern, snabb och högklassig touring för två.

Under modellens levnad mellan 1963 och 1971 kom flera motorstorlekar. Av dem brukar 230SL sägas vara den spänstigaste. 230SL presenterades på Genevésalongen 1963 och tre år senare kom den med femväxlad låda som tillval.

I december samma år inleddes sedan tillverkningen av 250SL som idag räknas som den ovanligaste Pagodan. 1967 kunde man som tillval köpa SL med nya karossvarianten hardtop, med två extrasäten bak istället för sufflett. Året efter ersättes 250 av 280 – som blev den mest tillverkade.

1971 rullade sista Pagodan ur fabriken. Då hade det tillverkats sammanlagt 48 912 stycken. Av dessa såldes sammanlagt 261 stycken nya i Sverige. I USA såldes de med helröda baklampor och andra framlampor, AC och lasthylla bakom stolarna istället för två små barnsäten.
