Tatra Tatraplan T600 — 1951

Exciting Swedish-sold vehicle that can be completed in its current condition, allowing an Iron Curtain–exotic and motor-historically interesting design to once again stretch its legs on the open road. In addition, a large stock of spare parts and a set of special tools are being sold as separate lots in the same auction listing. This is the model equipped with an air-cooled flat-four engine — and nothing else.

Beschreibung

It was registered for road use in Sweden in November 1951 and delivered to its first owner in Vaggeryd, Småland, at the beginning of 1952. Seven years later, in 1959, the car was taken off the road and removed from the register in February 1963.

After that, its history is unknown. It was likely stored locally, as the car reappears in 1979 in the neighboring village of Skillingaryd with a new owner. He carried out a light restoration including paintwork and interior refurbishment, and also completed a pre-registration that remains valid to this day. This means it serves as an approved identity, and this particular example — with all documentation intact — can be re-registered using its already assigned registration number, KHW908.

The well-known figure in Tatra circles, Egon Andersson, took over the car in 1984 and is said to have also rebuilt the engine. The current owner purchased the car in 2013 from a friend and has since advanced the project, including fitting a new wiring harness manufactured in the Czech Republic, as well as refurbishing the fuel system and brakes.

The engine has been started, and the owner has driven the car briefly in first gear and reverse outside the barn where it is stored.

In the same auction listing as the car, there is also a large package of spare parts and a set of special tools offered as separate lots.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

The original engine is still fitted, and according to documented history it was rebuilt in the 1990s by a previous owner — a well-known Tatra profile in enthusiast circles, Egon Andersson of Örebro.

The current owner has had a new wiring harness from the Czech Republic installed and fitted refurbished and modified Solex carburetors from Volkswagen Type 2 and Type 3 engines. At the same time, the fuel system was serviced and the tank cleaned.

The brakes have also been inspected, but at present the pedal goes all the way to the floor.

The car is missing its battery, and the function of the central lubrication system has not been tested.

  • Zustand Interieur:

Refurbished interior from the 1980s that retains a well-preserved freshness.

    Headliner in very good condition.

The instruments have not been function-tested.

Some electrical work remains to be completed.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

Presentable from a distance, finished in the Citroën color Bleu Grignan, which is close to the original metallic blue. The car was repainted in 1980 and shows signs of age, including blemishes, scratches, small bubbles, and some rust indications in the doors.

The underbody and frame appear to be in good condition.

The bumpers are in mixed condition and are included loose, as are refurbished semaphore indicators and a bonnet trim piece from another example, where the mounting holes do not align with those on this car’s bonnet.

Older cross-ply tires with good tread.

Keys for the doors and bonnets are missing.

  • Zustand gesamt:

A sought-after eccentric in the automotive world with strong collector appeal.

With a relatively modest amount of work, this particular example could be returned to the road in a usable, driver-friendly condition while retaining an appealing overall presence.

Fakten zum Modell

The Tatraplan T600 was manufactured in Czechoslovakia in 6,335 examples between 1948 and 1952. Production took place at the Tatra factory in Kop?ivnice until the spring of 1951, and from late 1951 at the Škoda factory in Mladá Boleslav.

These models were equipped with a rear-mounted, air-cooled four-cylinder engine of 1,952 cc. Ferdinand Porsche was actively involved in the design. For that reason, it is relatively straightforward to install a Volkswagen or Porsche engine in the car — something many owners did when spare parts for the original Tatra engines became unobtainable.

In the late 1960s, following the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia, it became virtually impossible to source spare parts for these cars.

The auction car, chassis number 76178, was built in Kop?ivnice in August 1951 — that is, after regular production had ceased there, but before production began at the Škoda factory. At that time, a leftover chassis number sequence was used, which explains why the chassis number is lower than that of the last regular Kop?ivnice-built car that left the production line in May. The cars subsequently manufactured at the Škoda factory carry a completely different chassis number series.

It is a popular myth that the engine lid changed from pointed to rounded in connection with the move to the Škoda factory, but the modification was made considerably earlier. The change from white to brown gauges did not coincide with the relocation either, but appears to have occurred somewhat later.

A total of 184 Tatra vehicles are said to have been imported to Sweden. According to information from present-day Czech Tatra enthusiasts, the cars were distributed by the Czechoslovak embassy to trusted Swedes — for example, individuals with party-political ties or those considered supportive of the Czechoslovak government. Deliveries were handled through a frequently cited general agent, Lindblads Motor AB, a subsidiary of Philipsons Automobil AB.
