Volvo PV 831 — 1954

"A fine balance between careful restoration and preserved originality has, over the years, created a consistent patina that enhances the car’s solid and authentic character."

Beschreibung

The PV830 series succeeded the PV800, which had been introduced just before the outbreak of World War II. Mechanically, the differences were not significant, but the PV830 featured a more modern appearance that kept it relevant through most of the 1950s. These cars were not classified by model year—the first series is referred to as 1950, and the second series is, from a technical standpoint, considered 1954.

This particular car is one of the very last ever produced—just five chassis numbers from the end—and was delivered new as late as November 1957. It was collected by Mrs. Elsie Ahlström on behalf of her husband, taxi owner Sölve Ahlström. Volvo even hosted a gala dinner at a restaurant to mark the occasion.

Sölve drove this taxi in the Östra Karup area of Halland until 1967. He then sold it to a buyer in Svedala, who only kept it for six months. It was at this time the car received its MA (Malmöhus) registration plate, which still remains on the car today. Later that same year, it was sold to a dentist in Kungsbacka. How he used the large car is unclear, but it was eventually put into storage.

A new chapter began in 1994 when the current owner discovered the vehicle, restored it, and had it road-registered again in 1995. Since then, it has primarily been used for weddings, graduation celebrations, outings, and car meets.

Over the years, the car has had no more than four owners or long-term users, and by all indications, it has remained in good condition throughout. During the restoration, the car’s original state was so sound that much of it was preserved—until a minor accident damaged the front, prompting a complete respray.

This Volvo Droska has also appeared in the Swedish feature film Kim Novak Never Swam in the Lake of Gennesaret, adding a unique touch of cinematic and historical significance.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

Mechanically, the car feels sound. The engine was replaced in the mid-1990s with an ED unit that had previously been used in a stationary fire pump—it's the same engine type originally fitted in the PV830 series. The car starts easily and shifts smoothly.

The taximeter, "vacant" sign, and other equipment are all in perfect working order. The speedometer can be a bit intermittent, and the odometer stopped working a long time ago, so the current mileage is unknown.

  • Zustand Interieur:

The interior exudes originality, with most components being original and very little having been altered during the restoration. The front seat shows some minor wear and has a damaged armrest. The original rubber floor mats—worn and aged—are still in place, which is remarkable after nearly 70 years. The auxiliary seats also show some upholstery damage, primarily due to age. The headliner is in good condition with a few cosmetic blemishes along the edges. The steering wheel and controls are in good shape, showing a well-preserved patina.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

The car was repainted in the 1990s following a minor front-end collision. Around that area, some blistering is visible. Overall, the paint has a glossy finish with good shine. Over the past 30 years, various scratches, small blisters, and other signs of wear have appeared. The chrome and trim are in their original, slightly aged condition.

There is some rust by the left rear door, but otherwise the car has held up well over the years. Some older repairs can be found in the rear wheel arches and the trunk area.

An unusual feature is the rear luggage rack. It's cleverly designed to also accommodate bicycles—unlike the standard rack, this one is foldable and twice the size, making it a practical and distinctive addition.

  • Zustand gesamt:

A solid and reliable car with many original details preserved, along with period-correct taxi accessories—offering a truly authentic nostalgic experience.
