Renault 4TL (Laban) — 1979

A small, slow, and simple car that became a best-seller, earning the nickname “Skrytbilen” in Sweden and now considered a cult classic. Here is a survivor that has been re-registered after many years of inactivity.

Beschreibung

The car has reportedly been used around the Norrköping area, and based on old newspapers found under the mats, it was likely put into storage in the early 1990s. In 2022, it was brought out, serviced, and passed inspection just in time for summer 2023. It was used last summer, but the owner (an old car mechanic and auto electrician) now wants to sell it due to changed plans. The car starts easily and runs well. It is in unrenovated original condition. It can be driven as it is but is also a good candidate for a rolling restoration. The rear inner fenders have been repaired for rust, and there are some small holes at the back and bottom, but nothing that failed the inspection. One front seat has been replaced with a newer model with different upholstery, the bumper is missing, but many parts and a workshop manual are included. See pictures. It’s a fun car that is relatively easy to improve as a hobby car, but also perfectly fine as it is. The odometer shows 106,800 km, which seems plausible given that it was off the road for nearly 30 years.

    The body needs a restoration to be really nice. The engine bay and underside look good. The exterior has worn original paint but is perfectly okay as is. You’ll receive many cheerful comments and thumbs up in this car, which was a bestseller in the 1960s and 1970s and is now a rarity.

Fakten zum Modell

Renault 4L (known as Renault Quatrelle in French) was introduced in 1961 as an alternative to the successful Citroen 2CV. Cheap, simple, and spacious, this was Renault’s first front-wheel-drive car and was produced in 8.5 million units until 1994, with the last years of production in Slovenia.

The model was successfully marketed in Sweden as an anti-car, lacking luxury but providing practical and affordable transportation. The advertising agency that launched it named it the “Bragging Car,” and it made a significant impact in Sweden. The peak sales year was 1968, with 4,500 cars sold, a substantial number at the time. The nickname “Skrytbilen” remains to this day, and the ad campaign was effective for 10 years, with the car selling well into the early 1980s in Sweden. Now, only a few survivors remain, so don’t miss this opportunity.??

  • At this auction, many vehicles have been included in car collections and have been stored (mothballed) for a long time. For this reason, they are described from a collector's perspective and may need technical reviews and maintenance service - oil, battery replacement, new tires, brake review, etc. - before they can be used. .
  • During the auction days information about a vehicle may be updated up to the day before the auction ends. When you bid at the end of the auction period - and also if you have made an earlier bid - we therefore ask you to read the descriptions carefully, in case something has been changed due to new information.
Important to know before placing your bids!
  • Once you have called in an item and the reservation price is reached we want you to deposit the entire purchase amount into our client funds account before retrieval can take place.
  • When you need to retrieve a called in object we want you to examine it carefully. If you consider that the item does not match our description you do not need to complete the purchase. In this case the deposited purchase sum and the entry fee are refunded.
  • If you do not examine the item on the spot the call charge will be debited, but you do not have to complete the deal.
  • If you make the entire purchase exclusively at a distance you have 14 days to cancel, but must return the item at your own expense.
  • Your shipping costs and other costs are not reimbursed when the right of withdrawal is exercised. Swedish court applies.
  • For items that have not been collected within 14 days storage costs may be charged.
