"One of the finest older buses we’ve seen, if not the finest. Lavishly detailed with the highest quality finish."

Beschreibung

In 2000, the current owner spotted the bus behind a barn in the Skara area. He immediately recognized it as his childhood school bus and, of course, the idea of rescuing it and getting it back on the road was sparked. The owner, a retired haulier from Lidköping, had previously renovated several older trucks that are often seen at events and rallies in this part of the country.

After some negotiation, he was able to purchase the bus and began the extensive renovation work. The body is made of steel sheet on an ash frame. All the wood and metalwork had to be rebuilt with the help of a company in Arvika (see pictures). It then took a few years to collect parts and details and to find a new engine. The bus was completed, painted, and technically renovated by Master Garage outside Eskilstuna. No effort was spared in the renovation to restore the bus, and the detailed work is of the highest quality. Today, the bus is in an incredibly pleasant and fine condition.

An interesting detail is that the company that converted the bus after the war hid documentation somewhere in the right front door and wrote about the conversion on the inside. These documents have now been supplemented with documentation from the latest renovation work.

The cost of carrying out a similar renovation today is almost unimaginable, but the owner has worked on this with the help of various experts for 20 years and estimates that it has cost up to a million kronor, not including his own labor. In 2022, the bus passed its registration inspection and was once again able to be of use and spread joy. It has been used on several occasions for graduations and weddings. The current owner has many memories of when the bus was used as a school bus in Västergötland in the 1950s. Around 1955, he and his older brother rode the bus every school day. There are two benches in the back, each accommodating five schoolchildren. Additionally, one child could sit up front next to the driver.

Fakten zum Modell

The bus is built on Volvo’s truck chassis LV101, which was Volvo’s lightest truck and was called the “spetsnosen” (pointed nose). The engine is a gasoline-powered straight-six with 86 hp, the same engine as in the Volvo PV800, also known as the “Volvosuggan” (Volvo sow). A total of 6,300 units of the LV101 chassis were built, most of them as trucks. Today, only about ten remain, and this is the only known one built as a bus. The owner recalls that it was built in Skåne, in Lund, but we have not been able to verify this. This example, from 1940, received its current appearance after World War II. At that time, the body and frame were extended to accommodate more schoolchildren. There is a chassis plate indicating that the bus was exempt from wartime placement, which suggests that it has been a civilian bus since new.
