This car was sold new in Sweden on May 15th, 1963, in Gällivare. Since then, it has had 11 owners, with the current owner purchasing the car in April 1998. He began a renovation almost immediately, with the car being blasted and painted with new sills. It was also properly undercoated and received mechanical updates such as a new generator and starter motor. It also received new door panels and carpets. Later, the braking system and front suspension were renovated with wheel alignment and the car received a new windshield. A new engine was purchased and installed in 2019, an engine that had been in a mobile power generator in the military. It was still attached to the frame at purchase and probably had not been used, with clean oil and no visible wear. According to reports, the odometer has turned once and now reads 40 110 km, which should be 140 110 km. The mileage after the engine change is just under 4000 km. It has always been stored in a garage since the renovation, and in the past five years has only been used as a summer car in Gotland.

Zustand technisch
Starts easily and runs smoothly. Everything appears to be functioning as it should. The undercarriage has not been checked while lifted, but everything looks good from what can be seen.

Zustand Interieur
Great condition interior with original chairs still sturdy, with a little wear on the driver's seat. Nice door panels and ceiling. Backseat in good and functional condition with a foldable backrest. A very nice condition underneath the backseat. The car radio is not functional.

Lacquered 25 years ago and still shiny and beautiful, slightly mottled but probably possible to polish out. There are some small scratches and dings. Chrome in great condition but there are quite a few pores on the bumpers and American bars. The Karmann-Ghia emblem on the trunk lid is broken, but all parts are available. Nice rims and period-correct Firestone tires in great condition, as well as the glass. The engine compartment and luggage area are in great shape. The windshield washer container is missing.

Zustand gesamt
A pleasant, beautiful and nice Karmann-Ghia where most things are in very good condition while there are details to refine. Nonetheless, it is ready to drive and usable and can delight a new owner immediately.

Fakten zum Modell
Already in 1953, the first prototype of a GT car based on the VW Type 1 platform was built by Carrozzeria Ghia in Turin. It is said that German company Karmann had tried to interest Volkswagen in a special car, but without success. When Ghia, with its fashionable Italian design, presented its proposal, Volkswagen jumped at the opportunity. It became a three-party collaboration between Ghia, Karmann, and VW, and production began at Karmann in Osnabrück in June 1955. Since the mechanics were the same as in the VW Type 1, it was not a true sports car and had modest performance. However, the design was considered stylish and aesthetically pleasing. For the 1957 model year, a Cabriolet version was also introduced.
For the 1960 model year, the cars received larger air intakes in the front, the headlights were raised slightly, and the taillights and wheel arches became larger. The occupants in the cabin also enjoyed improved ventilation with the addition of opening rear side windows. Over the years, the body underwent minimal changes, mostly minor adjustments, as the original concept remained intact. Mechanically, the development closely followed the progress of the VW Type 1. Production ceased in 1973, with a total of 364,401 Coupe versions built.
