"A beautiful car from the era of fins, chrome, glass, and powerful engines. These cars with Raymond Loewy design are highly sought after."

Beschreibung

The car was sold new by the car dealership Automobil AB Lindahl Co in Gothenburg in August 1957 to a woman from Uddevalla and has led a quiet life with few owners since then. A complete ownership history is available. The current owner, who purchased the car in October 2017, is the grandchild of the owner of the Gothenburg dealership. The name and emblem of the dealership are still present on the fuel cap, just as they were when it was sold new.

In the winter of 2005, the chassis, body, and interior underwent a complete renovation, and today the car is in exquisite condition. Mechanically, it remains in its original state with a V8 engine of 289 cubic inches, equivalent to 4.7 liters and 210 horsepower. It has a three-speed manual transmission with overdrive and a twin-traction differential rear axle.

The original instruction manual and extensive documentation accompany the car.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

It starts easily and runs smoothly. During a short test drive, everything felt tight and good. Everything appears to be working as it should, but the fuel gauge is not completely reliable. It has not been checked on a lift, but both inspections, the current owner, and what could be seen, confirm that it is in very good condition.

  • Zustand Interieur:

Reupholstered nearly 20 years ago, which is still in very good condition. So are the door panels, carpets, and headliner.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

Repainted almost 20 years ago and it's still in very good and glossy condition. Similarly, the chrome, glass, rims, and tires are all in great condition. The rims have their original appearance but are newer with nice original turbine hubcaps. The tires are older. The engine compartment and trunk are in very neat and clean condition.

  • Zustand gesamt:

The design of the Silver Hawk and its rumbling V8 engine form a beautiful and historically interesting combination that captures attention and evokes emotions. Here, it is in a highly refined restored condition with a solid and Swedish history. It has been recently serviced and is "turnkey" ready to drive, functioning as a reliable and well-performing classic.

Fakten zum Modell

Studebaker was founded by the Studebaker brothers, Clem and Henry, in 1852. They were successful blacksmiths and wagon makers, along with three other brothers. Like many other companies around the turn of the 18th/19th century, they also ventured into the novelty of automobiles. In 1902, they built their first car, an electric vehicle, and two years later, they began production of a gasoline-powered car. They produced electric cars until 1912. The company was based in South Bend, Indiana. They briefly added two more brands to their lineup, Erskine and Rockne, and also acquired the luxury brand Pierce-Arrow, but these brands had short lives. In the 1930s, they built impressive cars with names like Commander and Dictator, although the model names towards the end of the 1930s sounded somewhat negative. The entire 1930s proved to be a bumpy ride for car manufacturers, including Studebaker. However, in 1939, they enlisted the renowned industrial designer Raymond Loewy. When World War II finally ended, it was time for a fresh start worldwide. Studebaker was quick to embrace new designs, and in 1946, they introduced their new post-war cars with completely new and spectacular designs. They were smoothly streamlined and had rear windows that wrapped around the corners, as well as similar designs at the front and rear, which later inspired Panhard in France.

Studebaker stuck with six-cylinder engines for a long time, but in 1951, they also launched V8 engines. In the 1950s, they faced economic and other difficulties, and in 1954, they merged with Packard, which had mixed results. Towards the end of the 1950s, they introduced models like the Silver Hawk and Golden Hawk (with a supercharger), which gained attention for their stylish fins that were popular at the time. Like other American brands, they developed a compact model in the late 1950s/early 1960s called the Lark. They also produced a unique model called the Avanti, a sports coupe with a fiberglass body. Once again, Raymond Loewy was behind the design. Unfortunately, these efforts were not enough, and in 1966, the Studebaker story came to an end, although independent manufacturers continued to build Avantis with Chevrolet engines.
