"A pleasant car fitted with the original 40 hp B4B engine and a three-speed gearbox. The entire vehicle feels very genuine and retains its original specification. As it has seen only limited use in recent years, a general inspection and service of the mechanical and electrical systems is recommended."

Beschreibung

According to information from the Volvo Historical Archive, this car was delivered from the factory on 28 May 1949 to the Malmö district. Its history thereafter is currently unknown, although further information could undoubtedly be traced through regional and municipal archives. We do know that when Sweden introduced its newer registration number system in 1972–73, the car received the registration number GOE 939.

According to available information, the car was stored away for 25 years and has had a total of 10 owners. The current owner acquired it in July 2012, shortly before moving to Nettetal, Germany, and took the car with her. The journey south was interrupted as early as Värnamo due to fuel supply problems. Retired Volvo personnel were called in, the carburettor and fuel lines were attended to, and a new fuel tank was installed. After that, the journey through Europe continued without incident.

In preparation for registration in Germany, indicators and hazard warning lights were fitted in accordance with local regulations. The car was then used sparingly as an enthusiast vehicle on Swedish registration plates, but it was deregistered in March 2022.

In August 2024, the car returned to Sweden when its owner moved back. It was re-registered for road use on 7 August with a new registration number and passed inspection without remarks. Since then, it has covered only 16 kilometres. The Swedish Transport Agency records incorrectly state that the car was registered abroad on 1 January 1947, but this information is erroneous.

The car has seen only limited use in recent years and is now ready for a new owner. Included with the vehicle are various older documents, the owner's manual, and a selection of interesting Volvo literature. Also included are a radiator, a fog lamp previously fitted to the car, and an attractive bonnet mascot acquired by a previous owner in Sweden.

The car is inspected and ready for the road.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch

A little reluctant to start, but once running the engine settled into a smooth and steady idle. To be on the safe side, we kept the engine running during the photography session, but once warmed up it caused no further issues. During a short test drive through a residential area, the car performed well, with solid steering, a good clutch and gearbox, and effective brakes. An agreeable and comfortable driving experience.

The turn signal indicators and front lighting were somewhat intermittent during our time with the car, so an inspection and some contact cleaner would likely work wonders. Otherwise, everything appeared to function as intended during the drive. The car was not inspected on a lift, but what could be seen underneath appeared to be in good condition.

  • Zustand Interieur

Well-preserved original interior with honest patina. The upholstery is intact, and both the front and rear seats offer good comfort. The door panels, trim, headliner, and rubber floor mats are in similarly good condition. The steering wheel, controls, dashboard, and gauges remain in well-preserved original condition with appropriate signs of use. According to the owner, all gauges and functions work, although there are occasional intermittent electrical connections. The heater has worked well in the past but has not been used for some time and should therefore be checked over.

  • Zustand Exterieur

Nice paintwork, some of which may be original, although the wings have most likely been replaced at some point. The chrome, glass, trim, badges, and lighting components are in well-preserved condition. There are a few minor blemishes on the bumpers. Overall, this is a nice, well-preserved car with a strong sense of originality for its age. Good wheels and tyres. The engine bay and luggage compartment are in good condition.

  • Zustand gesamt

A pleasant car with an easy-going and unpretentious driving character that recalls the era of the Swedish welfare state, when trains ran on time and Snoddas played bandy and sang on the radio. A charming enthusiast vehicle, rich in automotive history and guaranteed to deliver a healthy dose of nostalgia.

Fakten zum Modell

The Volvo PV 444 is a classic Volvo about which countless columns have been written. It was unveiled at Volvo’s exhibition in the Royal Tennis Hall in Stockholm on 1 September 1944. Many sensed that the Second World War would soon be over, and Volvo wanted to be ready when peace finally arrived. However, it would not be until early 1947 that customer deliveries could begin. Numerous obstacles and delays arose, not least the shortage of raw materials during and after the war.

It is also well known that Volvo initially sold the car at a loss, as many orders had been placed at the introductory price announced in 1944, a figure that quickly proved to be too low. Nevertheless, production got underway and the PV 444 began appearing on Swedish roads. Not only Swedish roads, in fact, as Volvo's new family car also helped establish the company’s export business, first to neighbouring countries and eventually to Europe, the United States, and other markets around the world.

In total, 196,005 examples were produced before the model's run came to an end. By then, the new Amazon had been introduced in 1957, and in the following year the PV 444 was succeeded by the updated PV 544.
