"Yes, no one yet knows how old a Volkswagen can get! A slogan from the 50s. Here is a nice 1302 S in fine original condition, which has now reached over half a century on our roads. Although it has been driven sparingly in recent years. The last time it was started, according to reports, was four years ago, and it has not been inspected since 2011. Nevertheless, with “jump-start” assistance and two sprays of starter fluid, it started as if it had been only four weeks since the last time. This shows both the quality and the simplicity of a classic, which is often preferable. Even though we were able to drive it and everything seemed to function well, a thorough inspection and service are now recommended. When we took it for a spin for photography, both as a test driver and as a spectator in the follow car, I was delighted by this vehicle. So were those we met. It has a wonderful color and aura."

Beschreibung

This car was registered for traffic in Sweden in May 1972. The first owner was a gentleman who was now buying his third Beetle. He bought a new one every six years starting from 1960. In October 1988, a relative became the second owner. It has been driven very sparingly over the last 15 years but has now been started up. It has always been stored in a heated garage and was driven little during the winter period. The last inspection was in 2011.

Included with the car are the purchase contract from 1972, the original instruction manual, service booklet, and various receipts and documents.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

After a bit of tinkering with jump-start assistance and starter fluid, it started up calmly and gracefully and ran smoothly. Aside from some issues with the air in the tires, it was a good ride. Everything seems to function well. It has not been inspected on a lift, but it has been rustproofed, and what could be seen looked good. The battery is now discharged, and it is uncertain how well it will respond to charging. A new battery is recommended.

  • Zustand Interieur:

Very nice and fine original condition. A fitted cover has been on the seats for at least 35 years. When we removed it from the driver’s seat, there was dry foam in powder form from the covers on the seat’s original upholstery. After carefully brushing it off, the underlying condition was very good. A mild reconditioning will make the original upholstery look really nice. That said, the passenger seat and backseat have not been checked, but according to reports, they are in the same condition. Door panels, carpets, and headliner are also in fine original condition. Rubber protective mats have been used in the car. Steering wheel, dashboard, and controls are in good condition. Everything appears to function well. During the photoshoot, a small plastic cap was missing from the knob of the driver’s side vent window, but we found it afterward and snapped it back in place.

  • Zustand gesamt:

A thoroughly delightful, genuine, and fine Beetle, seemingly in original condition. Everything that should be present is there, and it is overall in the same lovely condition throughout. It hasn’t been out on the roads properly for a while, so an inspection and service are recommended. Here, you get a classic and enthusiast car that needs a bit of tinkering, but it seems to be mostly simple and fun tasks that are needed.

Fakten zum Modell

Countless pages have been written about the history of the Beetle, from the project’s inception in the 1930s, through to the English soldiers who revived production after World War II, and how the first cars made their way to Sweden and Scania Vabis in 1948. So let’s quickly skip ahead to the early 1970s. The later models of the VW Type 1 became increasingly powerful, with larger luggage compartments and period-typical interior details for increased safety, such as built-in headrests.

For the 1971 model year, the 1302S with the 1600 engine offering 50 hp was introduced as a replacement for the discontinued 1500 model. The new top version featured a McPherson front suspension, which provided a larger front luggage space, and an IRS rear suspension. These upgrades improved handling and comfort.

For the 1972 model year, the novelty was the addition of more horizontal air vents in the engine lid, now totaling 26. Otherwise, it was a quiet year. Although the model was considered somewhat outdated in many respects, it still received good reviews in Jan Ullén’s extensive car test in 1972. Both the 1302, with the smaller engine, and the 1302S performed well in their classes, receiving praise for ride comfort and reliability. Most competitors have long since disappeared and been forgotten, with a few exceptions. The Beetle, however, continues to shine in all its glory.
