"A fine and pleasant vehicle from the early 70s. With a sleek stance yet simple and service-oriented, just like a postal worker should be. I remember racing my moped alongside them in the suburban neighborhoods where we lived. Seeing a Tjorven with the characteristic sound of the belt-driven engine brought back fond memories. This vehicle is in good condition and largely appears to be original. It hasn’t been driven properly for a few years and needs an inspection."

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

Started without any problems and ran as intended. Functions like the belt drive, steering, and brakes also worked well. The electrical system needs an inspection, and a general service is recommended. The engine compartment is in good condition for its age. It has not been checked on a lift, but from what could be seen, everything looked good.

  • Zustand Interieur:

The interior is simple but in good condition. The driver’s seat has had a cover, and the brown official upholstery on the driver’s seat and passenger stool is in good condition. The headliner, also in the same brown color, is in good condition. Instruments and controls appear to be intact and functional. The luggage/storage compartment is in good condition.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

Fine paintwork with some use patina. The glass, chrome, rubber, emblems, and other details are at the same level. It feels relatively untouched and authentic. Good wheels and tires, with a few dents on the hubcaps.

  • Zustand gesamt:

It wasn’t just Saab and Volvo manufacturing cars in Sweden during the folkhem era. Kalmar Verkstad AB, with the help of Dutch Daf, also contributed. These utility vehicles, with Posten being the largest customer, evoke nostalgia and experiences today. In this condition, it is a pleasant classic and enthusiast’s car.

Fakten zum Modell

KVD, which stands for Kalmar Verkstad AB and Daf, is a story of how various initiatives were taken during the folkhem era to meet arising needs, often with political and state involvement. The state-owned Kalmar Verkstad AB started a joint project with the state-owned Postal Administration in the mid-60s to design a car primarily for postal workers within Posten. In Kalmar, they manufactured, among other things, platform trucks, so the step to building a car wasn’t too far, or was it? A prototype with an engine from Daf was developed and tested, and in 1967, KVD received an initial order of 1,000 cars from Posten.

When production of the model began, the prototype’s welded and pop-riveted metal body was abandoned in favor of a body made of fiberglass-reinforced plastic. The engine from the Daf 44, with a lively 34 hp, became the power source. Several different prototype versions and grand plans were developed, but none came to fruition, and only the vehicle we know as Tjorven was produced. Model 441 had a passenger seat, whereas the original only had a foldable stool. A number of improvements and upgrades were made, but it didn’t help, and production was halted in 1971. Still, in 1972, 225 cars remained in stock, and the last ones were put into use as late as 1975.

Why the name Tjorven? Tjorven was a popular character in Astrid Lindgren’s books about life on Saltkråkan, and it quickly became a nickname—perhaps because the whole appearance was a bit “tjorvig” (troublesome).
