"A roadworthy Karmann Ghia Type 34 Coupé is high on many Volkswagen enthusiasts’ wish lists. This is a rare opportunity to acquire one that has been restored by a former Volkswagen mechanic. To our knowledge, there is nothing requiring immediate attention.

Fully roadworthy and ready to drive – simply turn the key and enjoy."

Beschreibung

The car was originally sold by Bil och Buss in Sundsvall and was first registered on December 13, 1965. The original purchaser, whose occupation was listed as consul, took delivery of the car shortly after New Year in 1966. He retained ownership until 1975, when the car was traded in at the same dealership from which it had been purchased new.

The second owner, a gentleman from Sundsvall, kept the car until 1982, when it was acquired by the current owner, Kjell. At that time, the vehicle had some rust damage in the rear fenders that required attention. Kjell decided to undertake a full restoration. The car was completely dismantled, and the body was mounted on a rotisserie to facilitate rust repairs. As replacement rear fenders proved impossible to source, Kjell hand-fabricated new rear fenders and finished the seams using traditional lead loading.

Before the restoration could begin, Kjell first had to build a workshop on his property. Unfortunately, while the car was stored outdoors, it was vandalized and all of the windows were smashed. Finding the original tinted glass proved extremely difficult, forcing Kjell to purchase a donor car to obtain replacement windows. It took two years to locate a brand-new original windshield with the correct green-tinted glass.

From the factory, the rear fenders were joined to the inner wheel housings with a rubber strip between the panels along the wheel arch edge, a well-known rust trap. During the restoration, Kjell redesigned this area so that the inner and outer wheel arch edges were rolled together and welded using a more modern and durable method.

He also fabricated custom protective plastic front inner fender liners. At the time of the restoration, new door seals were unavailable, so the original seals had to be reused. As a result, there are some age-related cracks on the underside sections of the door seals.

The restoration was carried out over a ten-year period and was completed around 2008. The car passed inspection and was approved by the Swedish vehicle inspection authority the same year. The most recent inspection was performed in 2016, and the vehicle is now exempt from periodic inspections. Since the restoration was completed, the car has been driven sparingly each summer to local classic car events.

Included with the vehicle are the spare wheel, jack, and the original special tools for the jack, wheel nuts, and hubcaps. Also included are the owner's manual, service book, and every inspection certificate dating back to when the car was new. Last but not least, the original matching-numbers engine is included with the sale. Please refer to the photographs.

The owner is only parting with this cherished vehicle due to age. Having restored several cars over the years, he devoted exceptional care and effort to this particular project, creating a car he could truly be proud of.

The odometer shows 75,000 km. According to the owner, who has known the car and followed its history since new, this mileage is believed to be correct.

This is an online auction. The photographs were taken by an independent photographer. Information regarding the vehicle and its technical condition has been provided by the owner. Bilweb Auctions has not inspected the vehicle in person at the seller's premises.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch

The engine currently fitted to the car has covered approximately 6,400 km since its rebuild. It was built in accordance with the historic Group A racing regulations, meaning it has not been modified for increased performance but rather optimized within the period rules.

The engine has been fully rebuilt and features a balanced crankshaft, along with new cylinders and pistons in the largest permissible oversize allowed under the regulations at the time. It is also equipped with a so-called “bundle-of-snakes” exhaust system.

The original matching-numbers engine has been preserved in running condition and is included with the sale, together with the original muffler.

The braking system has been upgraded to a dual-circuit setup with four-piston front brake calipers. All brake system components are either new or refurbished.

According to the owner, the car is now in better mechanical condition than when it was new.

  • Zustand Interieur

The interior is original, with the door panels showing some fading from sun exposure. The carpeting is also original, including the carpet in the luggage compartment. The headliner has been newly upholstered to the original specification and appearance.

An interior detailing may improve the appearance of the door panels, but the owner has been reluctant to use stronger cleaning agents out of concern that they could damage the original material.

  • Zustand Exterieur

The body was painted after the sheet-metal restoration had been completed, with the bare shell mounted on a rotisserie. As a result, the car was painted both inside and out. The doors, front lid, and engine lid were painted separately before the car was reassembled.

The restoration was completed in 2008, and the car remains in equally fine condition today. There is a scratch on the upper section of the front panel that would benefit from a touch-up. Please refer to the photographs.

The bumpers are the original 1965 units and are in good driver-quality condition. The tires are approximately nine years old and remain in good condition.

  • Zustand gesamt

Beautiful, restored, and road-ready Karmann Ghia Coupé in very good condition.

Kommentar vom Besitzer

In March 1962, Karmann began production of a larger, American-inspired Ghia Coupé that bore little resemblance to the original model. Despite its styling influences, it was never sold new in the United States.

Based on the Volkswagen Type 3 platform, the new model featured much sharper, more angular lines, earning it the nickname "Razor Edge." In 1962 and 1963 it was marketed as the VW Ghia 1500, followed by the 1500 S from 1963 to 1965. From 1965 until the end of production in 1969, it was designated the 1600 L.

Considerably more expensive and exclusive than the original Karmann Ghia, the Type 34 was nevertheless produced in approximately 42,000 examples.

The Type 34 was manufactured between 1962 and 1969 and was offered exclusively as a coupé, although a small number of special-built and prototype cabriolet versions were also produced.
