Beschreibung

The most recent owner acquired the car in the early 1990s. He drove it for a while and then moved it into the carport to begin disassembly for restoration, where it remains today. Other priorities intervened, but both the interior and other details have been addressed over the years.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

Needs restoration. Regarding rust, the primary areas that need attention are the frame rails and the front floor. Inner fenders have been acquired. The front suspension has been disassembled and repainted, with all parts available. The cylinder head has been refurbished, and there is also an extra engine.

  • Zustand Interieur:

The car requires restoration, but most parts seem to be present. The seats have been reupholstered.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

The car is in need of restoration.

  • Zustand gesamt:

It’s difficult to know exactly what might need to be done beyond the fact that it’s a project that demands an enthusiast. The model is interesting, and like many unique car models with a short period of popularity, there’s a particular interest in them.

Fakten zum Modell

Opel was founded by Adam Opel in 1862 and quickly had successful sales of sewing machines. In 1886, the company began manufacturing bicycles and rapidly became Germany’s largest manufacturer of two-wheelers. The first cars were produced in 1898 but were a flop, yet shame on those who give up. In 1902, they made a new attempt in collaboration with the French company Darracq, which turned out better. The company grew, and during the 1920s, it became one of the largest vehicle manufacturers in Germany and Europe. GM bought into Opel in the late 1920s, and in 1931, they acquired the majority of the company’s shares.

The Opel Kapitän was the last model designed during the interwar period. It had a traditional body style of the time with protruding fenders. It premiered at the Geneva Motor Show in 1939 and was available in both closed and open versions. Production was halted at the end of 1940 due to World War II. Production resumed in 1948, now only as a four-door closed body. In the fall of 1953, a new Kapitän with a pontoon body was introduced. It was manufactured until the 1958 model year. In 1959, a completely new car was introduced, heavily influenced by the US market. It featured the trendy panoramic windows and fins of the time. The design was criticized, and even the passenger space was negatively affected compared to previous models in the Kapitän series. This led Opel to quickly develop the model, and the so-called P1 model was only in production for one model year. The automotive industry changed rapidly at that time, and panoramic windows and fins quickly went “out of fashion.” The model had a six-cylinder engine with a 2.5-liter displacement and 80 hp. Production ceased at 34,842 units. In Sweden, a considerable number of Opel cars were sold around the 1950s and 1960s, including Kapitäns. In hindsight, Kapitäns have been sought after, first as “raggarbilar” and later as enthusiast vehicles.
