"Well-functioning Mercedes-Benz 230 E that makes a good impression both inside and out."

Beschreibung

There are many stories about well-maintained cars previously owned by a priest—but this Mercedes has a history that surpasses them all. Documentation accompanying the car shows that its first owner was a monastery. After that, it was owned by a nun, according to the German car dealer who sold it to the current owner. He imported it to Sweden five years ago. A small icon on the center console serves as a memory of the car’s ecclesiastical past.

There is ample documentation of the car’s history, including the original registration certificate from what was then West Germany. There are also Swedish inspection reports and receipts for repairs, which more than compensate for the missing service book. The odometer reads 216,800 kilometers—a modest mileage when spread over the car’s lifetime.

The car is fully roadworthy and makes a solid aesthetic impression. For those who wish to improve its appearance further, a polish and some touch-up paintwork would make a noticeable difference.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

Technically well-functioning, this car is equipped with a slightly more powerful 136 hp four-cylinder fuel-injected engine than the version originally offered in Sweden. The automatic transmission shifted smoothly, and during the test drive, brakes, suspension, and electrical components all performed well.

Many older Mercedes models can suffer from vague steering, but this one has been fitted with a refurbished used steering box that works as it should. The current owner has also replaced the starter motor, battery, and parts of the exhaust system. The electric radio antenna has been changed as well, and a modern multimedia head unit is installed in the center console.

Two sets of keys come with the car, and a period-correct Becker radio is also included.

  • Zustand Interieur:

The interior is clean and intact, offering just the kind of feel you’d expect from a 1980s Mercedes. The door panels are in good condition, although the vinyl has come slightly loose from its adhesive in a few areas. The fabric upholstery is well-preserved, though slightly faded. The headliner is intact, and the electric sunroof was functioning during the test drive.

The well-crafted seats in the Mercedes W123 are spring-based, and the driver’s seat has developed a bit of bounce over time, which is fairly typical. The speedometer worked properly during the test drive, although the owner notes that it occasionally jumps and only starts registering speed at around 30 km/h. The driver’s side window has an area with scratches, though visibility is not significantly affected.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

The bodywork presents a proper and elegant impression. Much of the paint is original, and upon close inspection, various scratches and areas of surface rust can be seen. The hood shows signs that a small section has been repainted. The current owner has had rust repairs and repainting done on the lower parts of the doors and all wheel arches. However, surface rust is once again visible in these areas.

The front bumper shows some rust spots, as do the metal sections in the front end. A few small bubbles are also visible on the roof near the drip rail in one spot. The car is fitted with classic Mercedes “Baroque” alloy wheels, and a set of studded winter tires on steel rims is included in the sale. The winter wheels can be collected from a tire storage facility at the time of delivery, and the correct hubcaps for the winter wheels are also included.

  • Zustand gesamt:

A Mercedes that presents a proper appearance and performs well mechanically.

Fakten zum Modell

In January 1976, Mercedes introduced a new model generation. First came a four-door sedan, later joined by a two-door coupé and, for the first time, an estate car produced in-house by Mercedes. There were also special extended-wheelbase versions developed for more specialized uses.

The new model, internally designated W123, was the result of Mercedes’ intensive efforts to improve crash safety, while also being more comfortable and easier to service than its predecessor. At the time, Mercedes-Benz stood for a particular kind of luxury—not defined by lavish equipment, but by craftsmanship and quality. The iconic grille with the star on top made an impression, but the true appeal lay in how well the car was built.

Perhaps the most significant model-year update came in June 1980, when a new engine generation was introduced. In Sweden, the M102 engine arrived as part of the 1982 model year. The most noticeable visual change occurred with the 1983 models, when all variants received the rectangular headlights previously reserved for the six-cylinder versions.

The W123 was the last mid-size Mercedes generation to feature chrome bumpers and a standalone chrome grille. Production of the four-door sedans ended in November 1985, and the final estate cars were built in January 1986. In total, 2.7 million units were produced between 1976 and 1986.
