Beschreibung

In 2005 the current owner acquired a T4 Multivan with a Westfalia poptop, 2.5TDI (the same model as the one being auctioned here). This was a “special” ordered by the Norwegian importer Møller to get around Norway’s high vehicle taxes. At the time a standard T4 Multivan cost about 550000 SEK. Instead, Møller had the Multivan shipped straight from the factory to Westfalia for poptop installation. In Norway they then fitted two small cupboards made from veneered particleboard, and voilà—it was registered as a fiveseater camper for about 350000 SEK, saving some 200000 SEK.

A few years later, in 2010, the Multivan was sold for various reasons. The owner tried out other campervans for a while, but none suited him. Eventually, in 2014, the craving for a Multivan returned. The problem was that the T4 was aging. The search began on FINN (the Norwegian equivalent of Sweden’s Blocket). There weren’t many for sale—some were too far away, others in poor condition—until finally the owner found one just 110 km away. It was in excellent cosmetic and mechanical condition, and had been spared corrosion thanks to many years of use in northernmost Norway—specifically Tana in Finnmark, where roads aren’t salted in winter. At that time it had done 258000 km—high mileage, perhaps, but distances in Nordnorge are vast, so odometer readings climb quickly. The van had been well maintained and had recently received a new timing chain and water pump. It was in such good condition that the deal was made.

Fastforward two years: the owner moved to Sweden in 2016 and brought the Multivan with him. Unfortunately, he fell in 2018 and required a new left hip. When he later developed issues operating the clutch, he purchased an automatic vehicle. Since then, the Multivan has been used only as a summer and enthusiast’s vehicle and has, in recent years, been stored in a heated garage.

Under the current owner’s care, the water pump has been replaced again—curiously it failed at 287000 km, barely 40000 km after the previous change—and new glow plugs were installed. Recently it has also received newer tires and new shock absorbers. Some of the interior fittings are homemade and can easily be removed if desired. The Multivan comes with its service book and other documentation (see photos) and two sets of keys. It has passed inspection at the “blip” test station with no remarks.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

    The engine and drivetrain run smoothly. The brakes engage softly and effectively. According to the owner, all of the vehicle’s systems and accessories work as they should. A well-serviced, high-mileage vehicle in very good working condition.

  • Zustand Interieur:

    The interior is in very good condition. Some parts are homemade and can be easily removed if desired. Well cared for and maintained—see photos.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

    Good, original paint as far as I can tell. There are a few small signs of use, but the paintwork and body appear to have been used less than the odometer suggests. Very nice underneath. The vehicle has been spared corrosion very well, likely because it’s mostly been driven on non-salted roads.

  • Zustand gesamt:

    A Multivan in very good working condition. Pleasant, well-maintained, and ready for new adventures. Inspected without remarks in September 2024 at the vehicle inspection station, and road-ready.

Fakten zum Modell

After VW resumed passenger car production after World War II, it wasn’t long before they added a commercial vehicle—the Type 2, also known as the Transporter. Demand was enormous, and they sold every unit they could build. After the iconic T1 was produced as model years 1950–1967, an update arrived in the form of the T2, built for model years 1968–1979.

Its successor, the T3, debuted for the 1980 model year and remained in production until 1992. The Type 2 Transporter was made in a wide variety of configurations with specifications that varied by year and market: air-cooled or water-cooled engines, carbureted or fuel-injected, front-wheel drive or Syncro four-wheel drive. Regardless of configuration, it proved to be a solid, durable partner for all kinds of transport tasks.

One niche of the VW Transporter that emerged relatively early was the camping version. These ranged from simple curtains and air mattresses to fully built-in interiors and various conversions offering partial or full standing height. The Flower Power and Surf scenes have also become synonymous with VW buses in all their shapes and forms. Both amateur builds and factory conversions have come to symbolize freedom and camping. Even in Sweden, camping versions have been built—most notably the Monaco motorhomes by the company Campmobile in Åkersberga, which relied largely on parts from well-known Westfalia in then-West Germany.

Important to know before placing your bids!
  • Once you have called in an item and the reservation price is reached we want you to deposit the entire purchase amount into our client funds account before retrieval can take place.
  • When you need to retrieve a called in object we want you to examine it carefully. If you consider that the item does not match our description you do not need to complete the purchase. In this case the deposited purchase sum and the entry fee are refunded.
  • If you do not examine the item on the spot the call charge will be debited, but you do not have to complete the deal.
