"A beautifully patinated vehicle and time capsule that, after a 52-year Sleeping Beauty slumber, has now been gently brought back to life. It boasts a high charm factor and is fully operational."

Beschreibung

This car was first registered for road use on January 1, 1956. Reportedly it spent its early life in Norrbotten under the license plate BD36222. Since 1970 it has had three owners. Its last inspection under that ownership was in 1973, and it has never been deregistered. A replacement engine was fitted on June 5, 1969; according to a note on the warranty card (which accompanies the car), the odometer then showed 24,500 km. On May 18, 1972, the mileage was 47,980 km.

The current owner—a car enthusiast—acquired it one year ago, at which point it had done 50,180 km. The floor pan was previously rust-repaired—well executed, though the exact date is unknown. It has now been gently recommissioned with a new battery, rebuilt fuel pump, cleaned tank, and refurbished fuel sender. New ignition-system components have been fitted. The brake system was overhauled with a new master cylinder, new wheel cylinders, new brake shoes (the drums were in good condition), and a new hand-brake cable. All fluids have been replaced. A newly fabricated—not original—exhaust system has been installed. The car has been carefully started up and is now in essentially the same condition it was when laid up in 1973. A custom-made roof rack is fitted.

Included with the car are NOS rubber seals for the windows and various small accessories, plus the original headliner with its bows. As a curiosity, a parking-ticket from 1970 in Uppsala is also with the car—presumably paid—since the owner was a student in Uppsala who commuted home to Norrbotten. The vehicle has been newly inspected without remarks and is exempt from future inspections.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

It starts easily and the engine and drivetrain run smoothly, with a pleasant sound and operation. On a test drive over gravel roads, everything—from the clutch and gear changes to handling and brakes—performed well. The steering was somewhat heavy and took some getting used to, but it should be adjustable. It hasn’t been inspected on a lift, but everything visible looked sound in terms of vital components. There were no comments at the official inspection. The floorpan has been repaired previously, and the work was well done.

  • Zustand Interieur:

Upholstery is in good condition with normal wear but somewhat delicate; it lacks a headliner (which, along with its bows, is included). The door cards and panels, as well as the rubber floor mats, are in good order. The steering wheel, controls, dashboard, and gauges are in good condition. Everything works, including the mechanical clock.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

The body is in fine condition with its original patinated paint, showing normal wear for its age and the mileage it had when put into storage in 1972—a true preserved time capsule. The glass, trim, badges, and lighting details are all in good order. Extra points for the beautifully preserved grille and both front and rear bumpers. The wheels and hubcaps are in good shape. The bias-ply tires from the 1960s are still serviceable, though understandably aged. The engine bay and trunk area are also in good condition.

  • Zustand gesamt:

This car—an absolute charmer—is in the same lovely, patinated, well-used condition it was in when it was laid up in 1973. It still evokes strong emotions and draws attention today, whether at the gas station, at a car meet, or wherever it happens to be. A sprightly 70-year-old, it wears its years with pride and makes a wonderful classic and delightful collector’s piece—a rolling piece of Swedish motoring history.

Fakten zum Modell

The Saab car business first saw the light of day in 1947, and the first model, the Saab 92, borrowed much of its design from the company’s aviation activities. As the 92 evolved through various stages into the model 96 in the 1960 model year, you could still see touches of the 1940s even as it steamed ahead into the ’60s with the 96. When Saab launched the new 99—and later the 900—many thought the 96’s days were numbered, but like a phoenix it kept receiving updates over the years and soldiered on all the way into the 1980s.

As before, it underwent a series of steady, incremental changes so that, by the end, you could park an early ’92 next to an ’80s-era car and see that not a single part was interchangeable—yet the family resemblance was unmistakable.

Back in the 1950s, when the first production version of the 92 finally arrived as the 1950 model (after years of testing and its premiere on June 10, 1947), the waiting list was long. Production was very slow at first—only 1,246 cars were built in that inaugural year. In those early years, the bottle-green De Luxe finish was the only option.

The first major changes came with the 1953 model year: the rear window was enlarged, the fuel tank was relocated, and the cars gained a proper trunk lid. Moving the battery into the engine compartment also increased luggage space. With the addition of a removable rear seat, the 92 could now serve as a small utility vehicle (Saab even offered an insert-box). The seats themselves were updated, and internally the car was now referred to as the 92B.

For the 1954 model year the car underwent a series of upgrades and was officially dubbed the 92B. A new carburetor (Solex 32 BI) and a new ignition coil boosted output from 25 to 28 hp. The paint switched to synthetic enamel, and decorative moldings were added to the fenders. The wheels gained ventilation holes and the doors were equipped with plexiglass wind-deflectors. New Hella headlights with integrated parking lights replaced the small lamps previously mounted between the headlights and the grille/fenders. The dash and interior trim were also revised. Color choices expanded to gray, blue-gray, green, maroon, and black. On March 6, the 10,000th Saab rolled off the production line. By the summer you could even order a fabric sunroof.

For the 1955 model year square rear lights were fitted into the fenders and an electric fuel pump was added. The last Saab 92s were built in 1956, by which time its successor, the Saab 93, had already entered production. In total, 34,956 examples of the 92 were made, of which 14,828 were the B-version.
