"It's rare to see a Rallye Kadett in this condition. It has never been used for racing but served as a family car. The car runs excellently and looks great both inside and out. According to the previous owner, the car has only done 109,000 km."

Beschreibung

This Opel has been owned by the same family since it was new. After picking up his Opel in Germany, the owner brought the newly purchased Kadett Rallye Coupé 1900 S to Sweden. The journey crossed by ferry from Travemünde to the port of Trelleborg, and soon the car was ready for its new life on Swedish roads. The following month, the Rallye underwent type approval inspection in Bromma. Thanks to prior arrangements in Germany with the “Sweden package” and approval from GM Sweden, the car passed inspection without any issues. License plates were quickly mounted, and the car was ready to be put into use.

Shortly after, the owner was offered the option to replace the close-ratio rally gearbox with a 5-speed transmission to make the car more suitable for everyday driving, but he wisely declined. In 1977, the Kadett was transferred to the owner’s wife, who used it for commuting to and from work.

The following year, in 1978, the Kadett underwent a major renovation due to engine wear and rust forming on the front fenders. The car received new crank and main bearings, pistons, valves with stiffer valve springs, and new front fenders. To protect against stone chips and road spray, aluminum Lokkari inner fenders were installed. New shock absorbers were fitted, and the car was fully repainted in its original Cardinal Red color with black stripes on the hood.

In 1991, the Kadett was repainted again—this time at the automotive painting school in Norrköping as a student project. After that restoration, the car was mainly used for longer trips and camping holidays, including a vacation in Austria.

In 1995, a new exhaust system was installed, custom-made by Ferrita in Köping, giving the car a fresher and more refined feel on the road. By the year 2000, the owner decided to carry out another full engine overhaul, considering the overall good condition of the car and its potential for many more miles.

The current owner, a skilled mechanic, purchased the car last year and has improved and restored many details to their original condition. Extensive documentation and receipts come with the car.

Fakten zum Modell

The Opel Kadett B was introduced to the market in August 1965. It had a sportier appearance than its predecessor, despite being slightly larger. The Kadett was available as a 4-door, 2-door, station wagon, and coupé. The base engine was a four-cylinder with an overhead camshaft, displacing 1100 cc and producing 45 hp in its standard configuration.

In November 1966, the Opel Rallye Kadett was launched. It featured a 1100 cc engine with twin single-barrel carburetors delivering 60 hp. It quickly became a popular rally car. However, true rally success came following a Swedish initiative. While 60 horsepower was respectable, the question was raised: why not install the larger 1900 cc, 90 hp engine from the Opel Rekord?

Initially, Opel’s German engineers rejected the idea. They were skeptical of putting that much power into the smaller car and claimed the engine wouldn't fit without major body modifications. A Swedish team set out to prove them wrong. They installed the 1900 cc engine and shipped the modified Kadett to the Opel factory in Germany. The rest is rally history. Suddenly, you could order a nearly rally-ready car directly from your local Opel dealer.

The success was swift. Motivated by the strong reception, Opel developed a Sprint version of the Rallye Kadett, featuring dual Weber carburetors and producing 106 hp. In the early 1970s, the Rallye Kadett was a top contender in rally sport. At the 1970 RAC Rally, Opel Rallye Kadetts finished second, third, and fourth, led by a Swedish team consisting of Ove Eriksson, Lillebror Nasenius, and Janne Henriksson. In Sweden, the car went on to win multiple national championship titles in both Group 1 and Group 2. A true rally icon was born.

In total, Opel produced 103,622 units of the Kadett Coupé. However, don’t be fooled by what may seem like a high production number. According to the Swedish Transport Agency, fewer than 500 Kadett Coupés remain in Sweden today—including Rallye versions. Of these, fewer than 300 are equipped with the 1900 cc engine. So if you want a Rallye Kadett, time is running out.
