"According to its chassis number, the car was assembled in August 1950 at Volkswagen's factory in Wolfsburg, Germany. On October 27, 1950, Mr. Hällström took delivery of the brand-new Volkswagen Type 1, which was registered as BD 10116.

After passing through a few more owners, the car was taken off the road in 1966. In 2009, its then-owner began a sympathetic recommissioning. Due to lack of time, however, the project remained unfinished when the owner passed away in 2021.

The remaining work includes fitting the bumpers, restoring the wheels, and mounting new tires. Additional newly re-chromed trim pieces are also included for installation. As the car has been stationary since its last roadworthiness inspection in 2011, the fuel system should be thoroughly inspected and recommissioned. A full service is also recommended.

Once this work has been completed, the car will require a final roadworthiness inspection before it can be returned to the road."

Beschreibung

This vehicle was first registered on October 27, 1950. Its first owner was Mr. Hällström, who lived near Lake Kuollejaur (Guollejávrre), approximately 20 km from the village of Varjisträsk in Jokkmokk Municipality, Lapland, northern Sweden.

Mr. Hällström kept the car until 1958, when it was sold to Mr. Stenlund, a forestry worker living in Moskosel, in the parish of Arvidsjaur. (For those unfamiliar with northern Sweden, these remote villages have names as distinctive as the landscapes themselves.) After just one year, ownership passed through several more hands, including a baker, a utility line worker, and an auto mechanic. Between 1950 and 1966, the Volkswagen had a total of eight private owners, in addition to a few periods with car dealers.

On September 1, 1966, the car was officially deregistered at the request of its then-owner, Mr. Kristofferson of Vilhelmina. It remained stored in his garage from that time onward.

Around 2009, ownership passed to Mr. Holmgren, a mechanical engineer and classic car enthusiast with a particular appreciation for early automotive engineering. He began a sympathetic restoration of the early Volkswagen. In 2010, he applied to the Swedish Transport Agency to have the car re-registered. The application was approved, and the car was assigned its current registration number, CSH 371. The engine was rebuilt, the car was repainted, and the braking system was refurbished. On April 13, 2011, the Beetle successfully passed its roadworthiness inspection and was officially returned to the Swedish vehicle register.

Following the inspection, the car remained in the garage awaiting completion of the final assembly work. Sadly, the owner passed away before the project could be finished. His heirs are now offering the car for sale at auction in the hope that it will find a new home with a dedicated enthusiast.

According to Volkswagen production records for chassis and engine numbers, the engine was manufactured in July 1950, while the car itself was assembled in August 1950 (see accompanying documentation).

Included with the car are the original owner's manual, spare wheel, jack, and all additional parts shown in the photographs. Documentation from the Swedish National Archives detailing the complete ownership history is also included.

The odometer currently reads 99,070 km. As the odometer rolls over after 100 000 km, the true mileage cannot be verified. An alternative possibility is 199,070 km, although the fact that the car still retains its original matching engine lends support to the lower mileage figure.

Please note: This is a remote auction. The photographs were taken by an independent photographer, and all information regarding the vehicle and its mechanical condition has been provided by the seller's heirs. Bilweb Auctions (BWA) has not physically inspected the vehicle at the seller's premises.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch

Powered by its original 1,100 cc air-cooled flat-four engine. The engine was briefly started during the photo session using an external fuel supply. The fuel system requires attention, as fuel leaks when the tank is filled, making a road test impossible.

A new 6-volt battery was installed in 2025. According to the seller's heirs, the engine was rebuilt in the early 2010s. The registration documents confirm that the engine is the factory-original unit fitted to the car when new—in other words, matching numbers.

  • Zustand Interieur

The seats and door panels appear to retain their original factory upholstery. The headliner and floor mats have been replaced with newly manufactured reproductions.

  • Zustand Exterieur

The car was repainted in 2010, as documented by the accompanying invoice from the paint shop. The quality of the paint application itself is good, with an even, glossy finish free from runs or other application defects. However, the preparation work could have been carried out to a higher standard. Sanding marks are visible beneath the paint in several areas, most noticeably on the rear fenders.

The panel between the windshield and the front hood shows cracking in the original paint beneath the newer finish. Along the front edge of the roof, just above the windshield, there is a small outward bulge. The photographer speculated that a roof-mounted spotlight may once have been fitted, although the exact cause is unknown. There is also a minor scratch in the paint on the left rear fender—nothing significant. Please refer to the photographs.

The visible portions of the underbody, inspected without the benefit of a lift, appeared to be in good condition. A newly chrome-plated set of bumpers is included but not yet installed. Restoring the wheels with sandblasting and repainting, along with fitting new tires, would greatly enhance the car's overall appearance.

Overall, the body is straight and well preserved, with panel alignment and door gaps that are typical for the model.

  • Zustand gesamt

An early Split Window Beetle with a fully documented history from new. The car presents very well overall. Only minor work remains to complete the project, including fitting the bumpers, refurbishing the wheels, fitting new tires, and carrying out a light mechanical recommissioning.

Fakten zum Modell

About the region in northern Sweden where this Volkswagen Type 1 spent its first eight years

Kuollejaur is a shallow lake and wilderness area located approximately 20 km northwest of the village of Varjisträsk. The region has long been associated with forestry, reindeer herding, and Sámi culture. Varjisträsk itself lies in the Varjis River valley on the northern shore of Lake Stor-Varjisträsk, roughly halfway between Älvsbyn and Jokkmokk. When the Inland Railway (Inlandsbanan) was extended through the village in the late 1930s, a railway halt and freight station were established there.

During the 1940s, Varjisträsk became an important strategic hub. Demand for charcoal from Swedish industry increased dramatically, and the surrounding forests, rich in centuries-old resin pines, provided ideal raw material. Vast quantities of charcoal were produced in the area and transported daily by rail to Jokkmokk and Arvidsjaur. Not far from the region lies the Storforsen Nature Reserve, home to one of Europe's largest unregulated rapids and one of northern Sweden's best-known natural attractions.

About the Volkswagen Type 1

From mid-1949 onward, Volkswagen produced the Beetle in two distinct versions: the Standard and the Export model. The more basic Standard version, intended primarily for the domestic German market, was available only in Pearl Grey and Black. Sweden, however, imported the better-equipped Export model, which was also offered in Bordeaux Red, Black, Brown, and Green.

The Export model featured chrome bumpers, hubcaps, headlamp rims, and door handles. Beyond the additional chrome and more attractive color palette, it also benefited from a noticeably more refined interior and higher overall level of equipment.
